Winery Story
The winery takes its name from an early Canterbury resident, surveyor and farmer, Englishman Charles Torlesse. He gave his name to the Torlesse mountain range, which partly encircles the Canterbury Plains and was, at one time, the largest land owner and farmer in North Canterbury and founder of the nearby town of Rangiora. Interestingly, the name Torlesse is given to the underlying bedrock from which most New Zealand soils are derived. The long, narrow Waipara valley provides an ideal climate which consistently yields a harvest of mature fruit in excellent condition. It shelters in the lee of the Teviotdale hills, a trap for sun and open to the warming northwest winds that flow down from New Zealands southern Alps during the summer growing season.
Tasting Note
The wine has fresh lime juice and apple flavors, balanced with obvious residual sweetness and a crisp, clean finish.
Torlesse Sauvignon Blanc Waipara Valley(W-1162) - 2008

Tangy, ZestyA very acceptable blanc, although a tiny bit too tangy for me. Clean and light.

This sauvignon blanc has that unmistakeably New Zealand style--bright lemon and grapefruit, fresh and crisp. Drinks very well on it's own and would pair well with light seafood or pasta dishes.

Very easy drinking, crisp and clear. Drunk mostly alone, but also with some chicken and shrimp, both of which worked nicely with the wine. Tasted a bit of pear. Mild bouquet.

I had a chance to visit Torlesse Wines in Waipara a few years ago. It certainly was one of my favorite wines while visiting New Zealand.
We brought a few bottles of 2006 Sauvignon Blanc home and just recently found one in the cellar. It was magic revisiting our trip.
