Atlas Peak
Overview
Created in 1992, the Atlas Peak AVA consists of a collection of vineyards growing on and around the Atlas Peak Mountain. The soil here is volcanic, and while it is not fertile it does drain well. The climate is cooler and wetter than in much of Napa. The founders of the Atlas Peak Winery envisioned the area as a home for Babernet, Merlot, and Zinfandel, but it is Sangiovese that has really taken hold. Of all the Sangiovese grown in California, more than a quarter comes from Atlas Peak.
