Mount Veeder
Overview
Located in the Mayacamas Mountains in central Napa, Mount Veeder is named after the volcanic peak that towers over the region. The vineyards here occupy the east-facing hillsides below the mountain range. Mount Veeder is far enough south to feel the tempering effect of maritime breezes from the San Pablo Bay and receive an occasional layer of fog. Air drainage down the hillsides guards against frost, but rainfall is relatively high. Soils include sandstone, light clay, volcanic ash, and shale. The two best-known varieties here are Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet in particular is known for its unusual varietal intensity and is very different in structure than the average Napa Cabernet from the valley floor.
