Médoc
The name Médoc is used in two different ways. It is sometimes used to define the entire Médoc Peninsula, which includes the appellation of the Haut-Médoc as well. However, the Médoc is also its own appellation, also referred to as the Bas-Médoc. The Bas-Médoc is a purely red wine appellation, and any white wines produced within its borders are labeled as Bordeaux. The soils are generally richer than in the Haut-Médoc, and the wines are good value for everyday consumption. It is definitely inferior in quality to its neighboring appellation, the Haut-Médoc, and lacks the famous appellation’s star-studded lineup of chateaux. There are fourteen communes within the Médoc that produce wine, with nearly 12,000 acres of vineyards.
