Ross Estate Sémillon -2000 (WE-14706)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Despite its “unwooded” status, there are plenty of smoky, toasty notes—a hallmark of Oz Sémillon. Anise and grapefruit scents add depth and complexity. Flavors are broad and ripe-feeling, but there’s a persistent note of stewed peppers as well. 1 Note

Aromas are a curious mix of hickory smoke, flowers and pickle barrel. This Shiraz's mouthfeel is soft and dry, with flavors of red plum, earth and oak. A good wine, at a good price. 1 Note

Smells like toast and plush plums. The palate has a cool-vintage tanginess offsetting, perhaps overshadowing, its berry fruit. Dry; finishes with tangy oak. Imported by Wilson Daniels Ltd. 1 Note

Barossa Valley Estate Chardonnay -2004 (WE-50299)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Smells very nice. The wine deals vanilla bean, nutmeg, musk and floral notes. This isn’t a Chardonnay for the tropically inclined. There’s fruit here, but it’s taut (think unripe pear, sour apple, peach pit, that sort of thing). Sparse on the fluff overall. Imported by Pacific Wine Partners. 1 Note

The winery’s entry-level Chard offers citrus and an oak/vanilla/malt note on the nose. On the medium-weight palate are flavors of pear, lemon and melon. Tart and a little dilute on the finish. 1 Note

You need to like oak to enjoy this wine, but if you do, you’ll revel in its aromas of toast, vanilla and wood smoke and thrill to its spicy, oaky finish. In between, you’ll find simple peach and vanilla flavors. 1 Note

Peter Lehmann Chardonnay -2002 (WE-37920)

Shows clarified butter and a zing of lime or lemon peel on the nose. A fatter-style Chard, this Barossa offering successfully follows the straightahead, stone-fruit-and-oak recipe. A good wine, but a pretty run-of-the-mill one. 1 Note

Smells and tastes appley, with a backbone of citrus. Light in body; the fruit doesn’t sing loudly—we could only wish there were more of it. Finishes with tart citrus. 1 Note

Elder Vine Shiraz -2002 (WE-45687)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Though it’s Barossa, the wine is showing the coolness of the vintage in the form of cherry and black cherry fruit flavors. It’s pretty fragrant on the nose, too, the cherry bolstered by pine and nut aromas. Fine, minerally tannins complete the picture. 1 Note
