A complex bouquet of mint, meat, earth and tobacco opens this reserved wine. A blend of approximately 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, with small amounts of Carignane and Mourvedre, it's dry and fairly tart on the palate with a chalky overlay to the licorice and dried fruit flavors. Firmly structured and a bit hard now, it needs a few years to show fully. It closes with a meaty, herb-metallic and black pepper finish. 1 Note

A flavorful, tangy wine with spice, meat and chalk notes offsetting the excellent vintage’s ripe, chewy fruit. Has a lively palate texture and the slight herb-metallic overtones typical of many Rhône blends. Full without being weighty, this is well-structured with modest tannins to lose. Drinkable now with hearty fare, it will benefit from a another year of aging and be at its best from 2003 to 2007 and beyond. Editors’ Choice. 1 Note
