Reverie Cabernet Franc -2005 (WE-79116)

There’s a fine wine in here, but it needs a little time for those pesky tannins to soften. They coat the mouth with astringency, making it hard to appreciate the fruit. But the fruit is there, in the form of pure, sweet cherries. It’s not a longterm ager, but a year or three in the cellar should make this soft, gentle wine more beautiful. 1 Note

Martin Ray Cabernet Sauvignon -2004 (WE-82463)

Diamond Mountain, on the Mayacamas side of Napa Valley, has long been known for producing Cabs that possess hard tannins in their youth. Not this one. Modern tannin management has yielded a lush, lusciously soft wine, beguiling in blackberry and cherry pie filling and mocha flavors that are almost sweet. But the finish is thoroughly dry. 1 Note

Not clear that Cab Franc deserves a bottling on its own, as it’s better as a blending wine. That said, this is a pretty, polished red wine, full-bodied and dry in cherry, spice and oak flavors. Drink now and over the next five years. 1 Note

Hard, tough in tannins, and unrewarding. There’s not enough cherry and currant fruit to break through the astringency and give you a reason to drink it. 1 Note

Here’s a ripe, polished Cab, brimming in cherry, plum and new oak flavors. It’s soft and gentle enough for immediate drinking, although it has the structure for five or six years in the bottle. 1 Note

Only the second Cabernet release from this famous (as Schramsberg) bubbly house. This is a dense, dry, tannic mountain Cabernet, rich and long in blackberry fruit. It’s drinkable and probably at its best now due to soft acids. 1 Note

From this longtime bubbly producer (Schramsberg), a Cab that shows its mountain origins in the noticeable tannins. That doesn’t mean it’s not drinkable now. It is, because the tannins are ripe and sweet. It does mean that this is a wine to age. Finishes long and harmonious. Now through 2010 and beyond. 1 Note

You’ll want to cellar this one, because it’s tight and hard in tannins, as befits a well-made Diamond Mountain Cabernet. Entirely dry, it has a strong heart of cassis. But the structure is impeccable, and all it needs is time. Best after 2011 and probably well beyond. 1 Note

Few wines out of Napa Valley need age as much as this one does. That’s due to its mountain origins and the cool vintage, which combine to make the tannins pushy and hard. But once they start to fall out, the blackberry and currant flavors should emerge, pure and sweet. Best after 2010, but if you open it before that, decant. 1 Note

Impressive for the volume of its flavor, which is all intensely concentrated mountain blackberries and cassis, with an interesting and savory salty earthiness of green olives. Beautifully oaked, too, so sweet and refined in toast. But those notorious Diamond Mountain tannins are gigantic, and the wine needs serious cellar time. Stash until 2014, and the drinkabiity window could last for an additional ten years. 1 Note
