Chapoutier has chosen the old-fashioned spelling for this big, brooding bomber that will likely wow some yet might fail to impress others. We liked its heft and swagger, and we project that it will age well and do wonders for proper food accompaniments. The nose is all wood smoke, lacquer and butter, while apple, banana and white pepper dominate the flavor range. Very powerful and quite idiosyncratic. A cookie-cutter white it’s not, as it deserves time to unfold. Cellar Selection. 1 Note

You call it Hermitage, they call it Ermitage; regardless, this is one smooth, waxy wine with mature peach aromas and papaya flavors that spread across your palate like sea foam on the beach. The toasty finish is soft and subdued, with hints of licorice and pepper. Quite complex and idiosyncratic; it’s the polar opposite of “mainstream.” 1 Note

One of the Northern Rhône’s most prestigious wines is complete, dense and lush, with tons of spice and sweet oak. It’s not too heavy but it is definitely forward, and the fruit is pure, plummy and accented by amplified toast and coffee notes. Picks up character with every minute it’s open, which means it should cellar well for several years. 1 Note

M. Chapoutier Syrah -2006 (WE-100731)

Le Pavillon is drawn from Les Bessards, the most granitic of Hermitage’s climats, resulting in a wine with pronounced structure and minerailty. Hints of cinnamon and clove join plum and crushed stone on the nose, while the concentrated flavors suggest iron or beef blood as well. Drink 2015–2030. 1 Note

If the gorgeous notes of brown sugar, graham cracker and black pepper on the nose don’t reel you in, what’s in the mouth will. Its blackberry core is juicy without being overblown; black olives, earth, leather and even a little raspberry flesh out the flavor profile. Has a velourlike texture in the mouth; its tannins are soft enough to age well, but age it certainly needs—it’s showing restraint, and will need about 10 years to reach full bloom. Cellar Selection. 1 Note

The 2006 L’Ermite boasts a wonderfully fragrant bouquet of cracked pepper, beef blood and plummy fruit, but is a full-bodied, powerful expression of Syrah on the mouth, bulging with crushed stone and espresso nuances. It’s velvety without being soft, the tannins showing supple strength. Drink 2015–2030. 1 Note

If sticker shock doesn't send you running for the hills, this wine will be more than worth a go. Bold and rubbery now, with aromas of cedary spice, pepper and rich black fruits, this is a full, slightly fierce wine with enough creaminess and depth to bring it full circle. Roasted berry, herbs, spice and leather are all part of the bruising picture. Needs several more years to flesh out. 1 Note
