M. Chapoutier Rhône-style White Blend -1999 (WE-17268)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A big, fat, rich wine from the Hermitage vineyards of Chapoutier. The fruit is certainly ripe—perhaps excessively ripe—but the wine is still very young, closed up with firmness and a taste of bitter almonds. It should certainly improve over the next four or five years, but it will always be about power rather than finesse. 1 Note

E. Guigal Syrah -2003 (WE-73176)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A spicy, muscular example of Hermitage, this wine features red currant flavors tinged with darker shades of cassis and chocolate. It’s slightly creamy in the mouth, turning dry and tannnic on the finish. Drink 2010–2020. 1 Note

Cave de Tain Syrah -2004 (WE-72757)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A luxury bottling from the local co-op, this is a blend of wines from mainly Le Méal and L’Hermite. It’s a touch light in color—because of the vintage—with a spicy, peppery bouquet and flavors of red fruits and spice. Lacks a bit of richness and depth, but shows good complexity. Drink now–2014. 1 Note

Paul Jaboulet Aîné Rhône-style White Blend -2005 (WE-72843)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Rather nutty—almonds—on the nose, then broadening out on the palate into apricots and oranges. This is more focused and crisp than many white Hermitages, with a long, modestly tannic finish. It may age well, or it may be trying too hard and best consumed young. 1 Note

Cave de Tain Syrah -2007 (WE-116905)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A modern, lavishly oaked style of Hermitage that starts with creamy mocha and coffee aromas before introducing black olive. The palate is composed, round and just racy enough, with pretty flavors of blackberry, black currant, cola and earth. Supple and layered on the finish, with coconut and smoky darkness. 1 Note

Tardieu-Laurent Rhône-style White Blend -2007 (WE-109920)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

With its head-turning aromas of honey, truffles and ripe peaches, this is a knockout offfering from Tardieu Laurent. In the mouth, it's broad yet focused, with layers of rich, nuanced flavors that coat the palate before ending in a long, mineral-inflected finish. Drink now-2020, and possibly beyond that. 1 Note

M. Chapoutier Rhône-style White Blend -2000 (WE-26037)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

More forward and modern than De L’Orée, this bottling is clean, overtly fruity and ultimately very stylish. Butterscotch notes start it off, followed by peach, melon and apple flavors. Overall there’s undeniable fruit quality here. The finish is round, substantive and long, and here you’ll find notes of honey and white pepper. For a Northern Rhône white, it’s accessible and not too bitter or tight. 1 Note

Cave de Tain Syrah -2003 (WE-63079)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Lacks the haunting fragrance of the best Hermitage wines, but shows plenty of concentrated dark fruit and toasty oak. Supple and vanilla-laden at first, it firms up and shows more plum fruit and pepper on the finish. 1 Note

Paul Jaboulet Aîné Rhône-style White Blend -2007 (WE-102970)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Jaboulet's white Hermitage is a huge success in 2007, boasting somewhat restrained aromas of pineapple, but tremendous structure and length. It's full-bodied, with a finish laced with crushed stone and citrus. Try it around 2017. 1 Note

Domaine du Colombier Syrah -2005 (WE-72865)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Bottled only three weeks prior to review, this wine may have been suffering a little when it was tasted last May. There’s a bit of spice, but the wine just isn’t that expressive, showing crisp and tight, with some raw tannins on the finish. Seems to have potential, so hold five years or more before trying. 1 Note
