A Wine

Château Julien Cabernet Sauvignon -1998 (WE-5148)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A juicy, plump wine that’s filled with fun flavors, among them blackberry, mocha, vanilla and dark candied cherries. The tannins are soft; the acidity just fine. Don’t turn your nose up because of the price, or because you think Monterey and Cabernet don’t mix. This is a darned good value. Best Buy. 1 Note

Monterra Chardonnay -2001 (WE-22555)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This Chard is fermented on lees for 4–6 months, in both French and American oak, which is more than you can say for most other Chards at this price. Slate, pear and vanilla aromas don’t prepare you for the uber-malo toasty flavors that coat pear and apple-skin fruit on the palate. Mouthfeel is resinous, creamy and full-bodied. 1 Note

Five Rivers Chardonnay -2007 (WE-99565)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

A little sweet, like a vanilla wafer, but with its crisp acidity and tangy pineapple, lime and roasted almond flavors, it’s a good value. 1 Note

Mirassou Pinot Noir -1999 (WE-18573)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The general character here is light and leafy, as advertised by the herbal, cedary bouquet. Toasty oak on the palate helps support the simple but ripe raspberry fruit. And the finish yields dried cherries and coffee as well as some spice. Best Buy. 1 Note

Villa Mt. Eden Chardonnay -1999 (WE-12459)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Extreme leesiness marks this dry, astringent wine. It’s light on fruit, with the suggestion of peaches and grapefruit, while those cheesy-leesy notes provide most of the aromas and flavors. Not bad for the price, though. 1 Note

Blackstone Chardonnay -1999 (WE-10900)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Pleasant enough and Chard-like, with aromas of tangerine, peach and a kiss of honeyed oak. It’s got enough residual sugar to almost fall into the off-dry category. Well made and certainly affordable. 1 Note

Paraiso Vineyards Riesling -1999 (WE-10912)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Someday Americans will rediscover the delights of Riesling, and wines like this will help them do it. You hardly notice the slight residual sugar. It’s just enough to let the apple, pear and wildflower flavors dance on the palate. Good acidity helps keep things clean and balanced. Really, there’s so much to like about this wine, especially as an accompaniment to, say, fusion dishes, that’s it’s sad to think most people will never experience its pleasures. Best Buy. 1 Note

Blackstone Sauvignon Blanc -2003 (WE-50797)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Grassy aromas are balanced out by yellow fruit and cream; citrus and more yellow stone fruit shows on the palate, which is soft and a little flabby. Finishes tart, with grapefruit flavors. 1 Note

Château Julien Chardonnay -1998 (WE-1362)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Made of 100% estate grown fruit, this opens with a buttery, vanilla, almost liqueur-like nose. Pear flavors and a bit of tangy spice on the palate, the oak comes on strong on the finish. 1 Note

Château Julien Merlot -1997 (WE-1363)

Very nice quality at the price. Sour plums and black cherries on the nose, with cocoa and a faint licorice-like flavor on the palate. Blueberry flavors on the finish, dry and even tannins. 1 Note
