A Wine

Muga Tempranillo -2004 (WE-73532)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Plant-by-plant fruit selection leads to intensity, concentration and structure. Aro shows gripping tannins and juicy acidity, and overall it reeks of power and precision. At this young stage it seems like it could last forever. In reality, it should be just right in about seven years. Imported by Tempranillo, Inc. 1 Note

Bodegas Roda Tempranillo Blend -2001 (WE-36320)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Dark as night, pure as silk, and rich as a sultan. This one wine defines the best of the new wave; a great high-end product from a perfect vintage. It’s intense, spicy, racy and still soft enough to wrap yourself around. Licorice, crushed peppercorn, chocolate, espresso and blackberry are just some of what you can pull from this baby. Cellar a few years then explore. 1 Note

Muga Tempranillo Blend -2006 (WE-115320)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Deep and lavishly oaked, with aromas of toasted hickory, purple grapes, gaseous earth and black, heavy fruit. Nothing is shy or subtle here; it’s an erupting volcano of hard black fruit, tannin, hickory smoke and heat. It shows flashes of elegance and potential but also a lot of raw power. Needs a minimum of 3–4 years of cellar time to soften up. Tempranillo with 30% Graciano. 1 Note

Muga Tempranillo Blend -2005 (WE-106594)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Opaque and nearly over the top, with concentrated, roasted aromas of baked blackberry and dark plums. Super big and weighty, with driving flavors and some of the same lemony oak displayed by the Torre Muga 2005. Finishes in a mass of fudge, black olive and roasted berries. Hold until 2011–12, then drink. 1 Note

Finca Allende Tempranillo -2004 (WE-73504)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

One half of the wine is lush and opulent, the other juicy, fresh and pulsing with the essence of old-vines Rioja fruit. So for every note of molasses, burnt toast, chocolate or baked berry pie, there’s a twinge of acidity, a spike of tannin and a dollop of earthy terroir. Tempranillo with 15% Graciano. 500 cases made. Bodegas Roda Tempranillo -1998 (WE-4280)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Yes, it costs a fortune, but this first-of-its-kind release from Bodegas Roda delivers tons of extraction and concentration along with subtleties that complete the package. It’s yet another new-world-styled red from Spain sporting incredible density and depth. Flavors of prune, coffee and smoked meat yield to a finish of soft vanilla oak and the blackest coffee. Brooding, earthy, and intense now, it will become friendlier after a couple of years in the cellar. 1 Note

Marqués de Murrieta Tempranillo Blend -1978 (WE-81823)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Old wines are not easy to appreciate, so we’d almost rather have you judge this wine. In our opinion, it’s way too sour and lacking in fruit to justify rave reviews. Thirty years of age doesn’t seem to have helped it, and what’s left is sherried and pruny, yet with sharp acidity. 1 Note

Aurus defines awesome modern Rioja. The nose is floral and decked out with wild berry aromas, marzipan, vanilla and hard spices. The palate is powerful and tannic, with bold cassis, raspberry, cherry, coffee and chocolate flavors. Beautifully crafted and with a nice red fruit element courtesy of 15% Graciano to go with old vines Tempranillo. Drink from 2012–2021. 1 Note

Finca Allende Tempranillo Blend -2005 (WE-90798)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

With the exact same rating as the awesome 2004, this new vintage of Aurus is an unbridled winner. It’s a little creamy and sweet on first blush, but time and air reveals its darker, more serious side. Flavors of blackberry, barbecued beef and fudge tell all you need to know about ripeness and richness, and among the new classics of Rioja, Aurus is one of the leaders. Drink now and over the next three years. It’s not really for long-term cellaring. 1 Note

Char and chocolate, then a dollop of rum raisin and black cherry, and there is your nose. This version of Cirsion, one of our very favorite modern Riojas, is relatively soft, raisiny and simple, and for that it doesn’t quite rate with some of the past vintages, which were spectacular. But that doesn’t mean you won’t love the wine’s smooth texture, cocoa and baked berry flavors, and its overall generous character. Drink now through 2010. 1 Note
