KWV Chenin Blanc -2004 (WE-41124)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Ripe fruit and bubblegum hints open this clean, angular white. Quickly turns much less sweet than expected, its ample melon and tropical fruit supported by brisk acidity. A refreshing value Chenin Blanc (Steen in South Africa) that closes very clean, surprisingly long. 1 Note

Robert's Rock Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot -2004 (WE-49411)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This self-proclaimed “lifestyle brand” from giant South African wine company KWV boasts the usual trappings: brightly colored label, flanged top. What’s unusual is that the wine in the bottle is pretty good. Cherry, leather and chocolate notes provide a modicum of complexity, while the finish is soft and clean. A solid choice to accompany burgers on the patio. Imported by 57 Main Street Wine Co. 1 Note

Long Neck Shiraz -2003 (WE-39980)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Nose mostly mute; light in feel, it lacks fruit presence and flavor. Very mild red berry, cocoa, and toasty oak shadings show, mostly on the finish. Yes, it’s a simple value wine, but where’s the fruit? 1 Note

Robert's Rock Chenin Blanc-Chardonnay -2003 (WE-32060)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Pleasingly plump, this soft white grape blend shows pear and melon aromas and flavors. Definitely low-acid, but this vaguely Viognier-like wine finishes drier and longer than expected. 1 Note

Two Oceans Shiraz -2002 (WE-32746)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Good everyday Shiraz with an even, light to mid-weight mouthfeel. Not at all sweet or candied; stewy, dark berry fruit, earth and mineral accents make this tasty red an attractive value-priced choice. 1 Note

Oracle Pinotage -2002 (WE-32748)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Rich, juicy Pinotage from Aussie Linley Schultz, über-winemaker at Distell. The grape’s harder-to-handle elements are neatly restrained, becoming interesting accents here. Displays a ripe feel, dark fruit with Bordeaux-like tobacco shadings, and a smooth finish. More renditions like this will expand the grape’s possibilites and make it more friends. 1 Note

Oracle Cabernet Sauvignon -2002 (WE-32749)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Curious, with some dark sweet fruit and spice accents, but also a less enjoyable, sharp tart note that really takes over. Shows decent mouthfeel and even tannins, but the bitter element predominates, leaving a strong sour aftertaste. 1 Note

Oracle Shiraz -2002 (WE-32750)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Solid, tart-sweet fruit shines in this flavorful Western Cape Shiraz. Winemaker Linley Schultz’s confident hand shows in the judicious use of oak, balanced mouthfeel and tasty, lingering close. Shows some complexity and the structure to evolve. Enjoy through 2007, maybe longer. 1 Note

Oracle Sauvignon Blanc -2003 (WE-32751)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Impressive, with good tang and surprising persistence. Tends towards the crisper Sauvignon Blanc style in aromas and flavors, but a fairly round, smooth mouthfeel provides a nice counterpoint, and subtle figgy notes keep the sharper elements in check. Focused and tasty. 1 Note
