There’s not much body or intensity to this Shiraz-Cab, and what’s here is pretty odd. Aromas and flavors run the gamut from sautéed mushrooms in gravy to lifted fruit to Blow Pop. Confused. Imported by The Australian Wine Connection. 1 Note

This narrow, value-priced wine is unusual in its category because its dominating notes are earthy, woodsy ones, rather than forwardly fruity ones. Has edgy, wooly tannins that would make it a ready partner for some charbroiled meats. Imported by The Country Vintner. 1 Note

Shows clarified butter and a zing of lime or lemon peel on the nose. A fatter-style Chard, this Barossa offering successfully follows the straightahead, stone-fruit-and-oak recipe. A good wine, but a pretty run-of-the-mill one. 1 Note

Smells and tastes appley, with a backbone of citrus. Light in body; the fruit doesn’t sing loudly—we could only wish there were more of it. Finishes with tart citrus. 1 Note

Well balanced and medium bodied, this isn’t a biting-acids, oyster-ready sort of Riesling. Instead, it’s rather feminine, with pretty sunflower, honey and peach fuzz flavors swathed in chalk. The nose has nice, waxy yellow melon and citrus notes. Delicate, easy to find, and a bargain, as are most all of Wynns’ “Coonawarra”-labeled bottlings, which are all priced in the low-to-mid teens. 1 Note

This 58% Cab, 28% Shiraz, 14% Merlot has an easy, simple feel and a palate chock-full of red plum, tomato, and tomato stem flavors. Fruit on the palate is sweet and stewy; all around, just an odd combination. 1 Note

This reasonably priced Riesling shows trading-card bubblegumpowder and white peach aromas. Firm white peach and citrus flavors are couched in a round, amply sized feel. A very good wine, from an always reliable producer. 1 Note

Aromas are of black fruit and bread flour. On the palate, the alcohol is a little noticeable, but the plum and oak flavors are harmonious and tasty. A nice value. 1 Note

Ferngrove’s entry-level Shiraz includes 5% Viognier, but it avoids any Viognier-derived stone-fruit character, instead yielding up savory spice scents, a hint of mint and ripe blackberry and plum flavors. Tannins are soft, with acid providing the needed structure. Pepper and clove on the finish bring this bargain to a satisfying close. Drink now. 1 Note
