Tasted together with the ’95, and quite a contrast; a lighter nose with more herbal and earth-toned aromas, spicy, green herbs, ripe fruit, smoke, elements of tar and charcoal; elegant in the mouth with refined fruit; mostly red fruits, as compared to the ’95, which has mostly black fruits; this is a surprisingly fine-boned wine with an aristocratic structure; smooth and silky acidity and more subtle tannins; expressive finish and a much more classic style. 1 Note

A powerful nose launches this wine from the glass with aromas of coal and tar at the outset, moving more toward caramel and then crème de cassis with layers of black fruits, hint of sour mash as well with a lighter more citric element; in the mouth there is an explosion of flavor, but wrapped in a silky and seductively textured wine that conjures up liquid blackberries and ripe plums; all of this is contained within a powerful layer of tannins, but they are silken and smooth with shimmering reflections of light; big, intense finish, lingering in the mouth for a full minute.

Deep and rich aromas, loaded with chocolate and mocha, smoky, slightly roasted with coffee bean aromas, nice touch of acidity on the nose; sweet and ripe, concentrated flavors, great smooth tannins that are exactingly precise, bringing up the level of red fruits in this wine; beautiful balance and long finish with a slightly peppery flourish at the end; polished wine.

Very sweet and ripe nose, brimming with chocolate and mocha aromas that have added on value from ripe black fruits, black plums, pepper, earth and varied spices; sweet and ripe in the mouth, this wine has real black plum flavors; in the mid-mouth though this wine turns lean and citric; settling into a set of flavors that lack the softness and richness that give the wines of this property their appeal; finishes hard and brittle.

Rich and ripe nose, loaded with elements of mocha and chocolate, but at the same time very spicy nose with cracked black pepper, then more complexity with green olives and green pepper aromas, all in a bath of ripe black fruits; a deep and intense wine on first taste, with layers of black cherry, blackberry, and blueberry flavors; cassis liquer; smooth and silky; seems to be a bit dilute in the middle of the mouth, but finishes strong with layers of perfume-scented fruit and tar. (18+) Tasted several more times during the year with consistent results; remains a top wine in my taste lexicon. 1 Note

Not a particularly successful wine for this Château, it is nonetheless enjoyable; sweet and overly ripe nose, almost stewed, with sweet and candied aromas, but at the same time, there are aromas of earth, tobacco and a strange touch of camphor; sweet, ripe and softly textured fruit in the mouth; what I have found, however, that the wine is dull, and this bottle was similarly so; the wine fails to arouse the senses, although it does not offend either

Powerfully defined green pepper nose with an equal amount of green olives, then more black earth aromas and rich fruit, also very perfumed and aromatic with a nice mix of floral notes with chocolate and black pepper; sweet and ripe fruit in the mouth at the outset, gives way to more citrus flavors later; well focused, although the wine is a bit thin and ill defined; what saves it is the purity of fruit, and certainly this bottle was fresh with satisfying flavors. One of the best wines of the vintage, and still so today; deep and rich aromas, sweet chocolate and caramel aromas, black and green pepper, coal, perfumed elegant fruit; sweet and smooth in the mouth on entry with polished flavors; chocolate and blackberries, crème de cassis, ripe and intensely flavored with layers of black fruits, dry tannins, and earth; long mouthfilling finish; note of caution though that among several bottles tasted there was considerable variation with this description of the best bottle tasted. Tasted again at the Commanderie’s Palmer dinner with like results; this remains a wonderful wine that embodies all of the elements of a mature Bordeaux at the highest levels of quality.

A very perfumed wine with interesting floral aromatics that suggest geraniums, quite sweet with a touch of sugar, also a hint of smoke, mature fruit; sweet flavors in the mouth are presented on a smooth and silky palette; aged fruit and a bit faded, but still with sex appeal; good acidity, but this wine is fading and needs to be drunk soon.
