A Wine

Benziger Chardonnay -2000 (WE-16288)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is a bit drier and crisper than many Chards out there today. It has bracing acidity and even some scouring tannins, and what fruit there is veers toward apples and citrus rather than riper peaches. That makes it a food wine, and a very nice one, too. —S.H. 1 Note

Charles Krug Pinot Noir -1998 (WE-15037)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A sturdy wine, with a bouquet of dark cherry, cola, toast, and a touch of barnyard. The initial flavors are sweet dried cherry, then turn toward more complex leather, sour plum and toast. Tobacco, and a reprise of the early barnyard note, play on the finish with nice back end aromatics 1 Note

Beckmen Marsanne -2001 (WE-20892)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

If you’re not sure what a California Marsanne is supposed to taste like, don’t worry. Nobody else is, either. This one is full of peach and white chocolate flavors, and has a little bit of sugar. Fortunately, good acidity creates balance. The finish is clean and candied. 1 Note

Bernardus Sauvignon Blanc -2008 (WE-100490)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

When Bernardus gets Sauvignon Blanc right, which they did in this vintage, they avoid those notorious feline aromas and go straight toward fruit. This is such a wine. It flatters the mouth with Meyer lemon cream, pineapple tart and vanilla flavors, accented with minerals and richly edged with crisp acidity. With a bit of buttered toast from partial barrel fermentation, it’s just delicious. 1 Note

DeLorimier Sauvignon Blanc -2000 (WE-20946)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Very flavorful, with a melange of citrus, peach, apricot, apple and bubblegum flavors and a rich, honeyed finish. A bit soft in acidity and basically one-dimensional. A blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Viognier. 1 Note

Rio Seco Syrah -1999 (WE-20362)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Rough, country style, with an aggressive edge that time won’t soften. The grapes are fine. They got nice and ripe, and put out berry flavors that are deep and delicious. But somehow, that rustic quality hangs in there. 1 Note

Braren Pauli Cabernet Sauvignon -1999 (WE-16144)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Hate to say it, but this is the kind of wine Mendocino is struggling to leave behind. It’s rough and earthy, and seems simultaneously underripe and overripe. Dry, with good tannins, it’s not going anywhere. —S.H. 1 Note

Lazy Creek Chardonnay -2000 (WE-16171)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Lean and strongly flavored with a taste of the earth: mineral, slate and subtle hints of apples. The winemaking was hands -on, with partial barrel fermentation and lees aging, but it’s still a wine of austerity, at least for Chardonnay. High acidity adds a scour to the finish. —S.H. 1 Note

McDowell Viognier -2000 (WE-16189)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Lots of smoke and butterscotchy tapioca in the nose, and a spicy, peaches-and-cream sweetness. Drinks very fruity, with ripe peach and citrus flavors and spices, but is very dry and searing with high acids. —S.H. 1 Note

A nice, sturdy little drinking wine, fruity and slightly sweet, and sprightly with crisp acids. Especially nice are the richly spicy notes that surround the apricot and citrus flavors. 1 Note
