Kumeu River Red Blend -1998 (WE-10873)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

In a hot vintage like 1998, Kumeu’s proprietary blend of Merlot (65%), Malbec (30%) and Cabernet Franc (5%) gets ripe enough to avoid any suggestion of weediness. Strong cinnamon notes from new oak complement plush black-cherry fruit. Anise and leather nuances spice up the finish. 1 Note

Te Kairanga Pinot Noir -2000 (WE-9879)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Hailing form the North Island, this is a confounding wine that seems to want to be better than it is. It's foxxy and funky in the nose, even a little burnt, yet the candy-like black-cherry palate is fairly pleasant. While hardly perfect, there's enough true Pinot character here to make it worthwhile. 1 Note

Escarpment Pinot Gris -2001 (WE-27071)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This wine, from a much-hyped enterprise led by winemaker Larry McKenna (formerly of Martinborough Vineyard), was somewhat disappointing. The delicate nuances of Pinot Gris are swept away by a tidal wave of oak—yummy-tasting French oak—but oak nonetheless. 1 Note

Craggy Range Sauvignon Blanc -2006 (WE-67019)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

After a slightly rubbery or tarry note when first poured, this wine cleans up nicely to present grassy herbal notes balanced by stone fruit. It’s tightly focused and a bit more minerally than many NZ Sauvignon Blancs, without being overly tart or lemony. Should drink well through the end of 2008. Imported by Kobrand Corporation. 1 Note

Ata Rangi Sauvignon Blanc -2006 (WE-75024)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

With flavors that range from nectarine through grapefruit and brush up against bell pepper, this is a broad-spectrum Sauvignon Blanc that should prove versatile with food. It’s medium-bodied, with a dry, slightly minerally finish. 1 Note

Te Awa Sauvignon Blanc -2006 (W-911)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Bottlenotes' tasting notes are right on. Really nicely balanced, although surprisingly more fruity than I expected. Perhaps a bit too fruity for my tastes. Interesting complexity though -- some surprising flavors. Went nicely with both the antipasto & halibut. 2 Notes

Stonecrop Pinot Noir -2008 (WE-108341)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A terrific Pinot Noir value, Stonecrop’s 2008 exhibits smoky, cedary aromas, but balances the oak with a solid foundation of cherry fruit and savory, mushroomy complexity. It’s full bodied yet elegant, with a meaty finish. Drink now–2013. 1 Note

Palliser Estate Pinot Noir -1998 (WE-3514)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Solid earthy aromas accented by bacon and vanilla presage round berry fruit favoring strawberry and cherry. Fairly full-bodied, in that it stands up in the glass like a Bordeaux. Not austere or overtly spicy; instead it is friendly and comes to life with breathing. 1 Note

Craggy Range Riesling -2005 (WE-63607)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Drier-tasting and slightly more austere than the Fletcher Family Vineyard bottling, this Riesling from Craggy’s own vineyard in Martinborough features zesty lemon and lime aromas and flavors backed by various spices, including ginger and clove. It’s medium-bodied, with a long spice-and-citrus finish. 1 Note

Stonecrop Pinot Noir -2006 (WE-77832)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This Pinot is a fine follow-up to the 2006 SB, offering complex aromas of compost, plum and cola, framed by smoky, toasty oak. It’s plump and silky in the mouth, with a long finish that picks up a touch of cranberry. Drink it over the next few years. Imported by Fruit of the Vines Inc. 1 Note
