A Wine

Martinborough Vineyard Riesling -1999 (WE-10885)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Intense dried-apricot aromas and flavors indicate a high degree of botrytis, which would be overwhelming except for the trademark New Zealand acidity. Despite the heavy botrytis and sweet mango fruit, a sharp lime-citrus edge cuts through the richness, suggesting that cellaring 3–5 years is possible. 1 Note

Kumeu River Pinot Noir -1999 (WE-10882)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

There’s an herbaceous streak to this wine but it’s more than compensated for by black-cherry fruit and exciting smoked meat aromas that kept me going back for another sniff. Supple and ready to drink now and over the next few years. 1 Note

Te Kairanga Pinot Noir -2007 (WE-110798)

Martinborough’s trademark savoriness comes through in this wine as hints of soy and mushroom, layered over cherry fruit and chocolaty oak. This medium-bodied Pinot Noir is a bit tight and crisp right now, but it should be fully open and ready for business by mid-2011 and drink well for another 5–6 years after that. 1 Note

Kumeu River Pinot Noir -2002 (WE-41113)

A lightweight, delicate style, with slightly stinky, smoky and cedary aromas that give way only stubbornly to cherry and herb flavors. Tart and clean on the finish. 1 Note

Te Kairanga Pinot Noir -2005 (WE-66276)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Yields in 2005 were so low that “we had to send out search parties at harvest time,” jokes winemaker Peter Caldwell. This is a dark, almost inky, wine, with aromas and flavors of black cherries and plums, all wrapped in a slightly herbal edge of drying tannins. Hold and see if another year or two takes some of that edge off. 1 Note

Te Kairanga Chardonnay -2005 (WE-66270)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

More restrained on the nose than the regular Chardonnay, but with greater depth, richness and texture, the 2005 Casarina Reserve Chardonnay is a selection of older vines, mainly the Mendoza clone. Subtle popcorn and cereal-grain notes add elegance to the melon fruit, finishing with crisp acids that balance the wine’s weight. 1 Note
