Penley Estate Pinot Noir -2008 (WE-118439)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

At $15, this represents a decent value, just be aware that this is not a pretty, light-bodied Pinot Noir. It’s more of a round, mouthfilling Pinot, with notes of coffee- and chocolate-tinged oak accenting cherry and earth. 1 Note

Waca Cabernet Sauvignon -2004 (WE-92376)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Hmmm. This shows some attractive savory and spicy elements on the nose, but the fruit is limited to tart berries and the feel on the palate is lean and astringent. Drink up. 1 Note

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz -2000 (WE-18710)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Seems heavy on the American oak, displaying lactic, dill-laden aromatics that partially mute the berry fruit underneath. Still, the tart berries come through on the finish—a good sign for the future. Give it a couple of years in the cellar to come together. —J.C. 1 Note

Lindemans Chardonnay -1998 (WE-6765)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A polished wine with an array of ripe fruits ranging from apple and peach to tropical fruit. It’s clean and sharp, thanks to high acidity. The fruit flavor is a bit simple, veering to lemon and lime, but it sure cleans the palate. 1 Note

Hollick Chardonnay -2001 (WE-33395)

We found pear and cinnamon at the core of this medium-weight wine, which is punctuated with a tangy finish. Quite a buttery chard, but a harmonious, very good one. 1 Note

Jim Barry Cabernet Sauvignon -2001 (WE-34110)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Give this Cab a little time to open, and you'll be rewarded with blackberry and black pepper aromas, and big, smooth plum flavors on the palate. The best part is its chalky-claylike mouthfeel. This is Jim Barry Wines' first foray outside of Clare; the winery has bought a Coonawarra vineyard that's planted on a former cricket field, hence the label and the name. 1 Note

Mawson's Cabernet Sauvignon -2005 (WE-78357)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

From the team at Yalumba, this is an excellent value, delivering dark, concentrated aromas and flavors of cassis and chocolate, leavened with just a touch of mint. Finishes long, with silky tannins that should allow it to age through 2012. 1 Note

Nick Faldo Cabernet Sauvignon -2005 (WE-78531)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Are golfer-inspired wines the next big thing? First came Greg Norman, then Ernie Els, now there’s Nick Faldo. Made by Katnook Estate, this is a dark, plushly textured wine that’s immediately accessible. Cassis and plum fruit is framed by dark accents of coffee and cola, picking up hints of mint on the finish. Imported by Freixenet USA. 1 Note

Balnaves of Coonawarra Bordeaux-style Red Blend -1998 (WE-19560)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc is a bit earthy and brambly, with just a hint of sweaty leather adding character. Plum and cherry fruit offers some sweetness to the palate but there’s also a hint of tomato. Mild oak and moderate persistence to the finish seal it. 1 Note

Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon -1998 (WE-13760)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

An impressively balanced Cabernet with a dark cherry-cassis-herb-tobacco profile. Lithe and supple, it has fine fruit and elegance for a wine in this price range. It also has the potential to last surprisingly well. Finishes with good fruit and acidity and firm, even tannins. 1 Note
