Delas Frères Syrah -1999 (WE-16462)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Full and even dark fruit with spice and cream notes mark this handsome, affordable red. It’s not at all heavy, and is quite tasty, with dry herb-tobacco shadings on the tart, dry berry flavors. Finishes with nice length, and goes down real easy, just like the 1998, which performed well in our World Cup of Syrah last fall. Editors’ Choice. 1 Note

Cave de Tain Syrah -2004 (WE-63071)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A respectable value for a northern Rhône Syrah, the Tain co-op’s 2004 is a soft, easygoing wine with pepper and prune aromas and flavors. Not a lot of stuffing or weight, but shows a fair degree of elegance. 1 Note

Vidal-Fleury Syrah -2000 (WE-23074)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Black plum, blackberry and mineral notes comprise the nose, which leads into a palate of light, snappy red fruit with fine tannins and an overall good mouthfeel. The finish is soft, clean and a bit simple, and in general, the attitude of the wine is reverent yet sufficiently wild. Clean and svelte; not much is out of place here. 1 Note

Cave de Tain Syrah -2004 (WE-63073)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This cuvée is meant to be a step up from the regular Crozes-Hermitage, but in 2004 it’s different but not really any better. Subdued oaky spice and prune notes on the nose; it is softer and rounder than the regular cuvée, finishing with a burst of pepper and acidity. 1 Note

Domaines Pochon Syrah -2004 (WE-62922)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Starts off rather dark, marked by smoke, charred wood, espresso and black olive notes. But there’s a core of fruit and spice as well. Feels plump and round in the mouth, but lacks great depth or structure. Drink now for its pretty finish filled with spice and tea leaves. 1 Note

Paul Jaboulet Aîné Syrah -2003 (WE-58371)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Not up to the level of Jaboulet’s Domaine de Thalabert bottling, the 2003 Les Jalets is nevertheless a very good wine, offering peppery, herbal and red-fruit aromas and flavors of tart cherries and green olives. Despite the red-green character of the fruit, the mouthfeel is smooth and slightly creamy. Turns crisp on the finish. 1 Note

Cave de Tain Syrah -2003 (WE-62907)

A very good effort from this modern co-op in Tain. There’s good concentration and balance, with meaty, cedary notes playing against cherry fruit, while the structure is firm but approachable. Drink now. 1 Note

Domaine des Entrefaux Syrah -2004 (WE-62913)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

I wanted to like this more, given its pretty aromas of cherries and raspberries combined with spring flowers. But there’s an ominous horsey note as well, and a slightly metallic note on the finish that gives some concern. 1 Note

Domaine Michelas St Jemm Syrah -2003 (WE-62936)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Black olives and blackberries here, with the somewhat rustic flavors smoothed out by a full, round mouthfeel. Lacks a little spice and nuance, but shows good power and length on the finish. Drink 2007-2015. 1 Note
