Cantine dei Marchesini DOCG Sangiovese -2008

Trying to figure out where the heck this winery is located almost proved to be next to impossible; however, one thing's for sure, it's definitely a Tuscan. Anyway, the important fact here is that it's a DOCG Chianti, meaning it's a quality made wine, at least by Italian standards. DOCG is the pinnacle standard in Italy. If you try this wine, remember that Chianti is supposed to be light, earthy, and made to drink young. I came across a couple of reviews which seemed to imply that there was too much mineral, thus an iron aftertaste, and only after letting it aerate awhile did it become drinkable. The reviews were from 2009, so they were probably refering to the 2006-07 vintages. I had the 2008. I let it sit for about 45 minutes. I found the aroma to be quite nice: light red fruits, earth, herb; and the flavor nearly matched its bouquet. There was a hint of mineral, but I thought it only added to the nice flavor of the wine; my opinion of course, but for $10, it was worth drinking. This wine is made to be consumed with lighter foods such as a roasted chicken, heavier fish, and pasta with marinara. If you want a bolder Chianti, you should try a Classico, or Riserva. 1 Note

Broadmoore Estates Sangiovese -2008

Medium on the palate, aromas of cherries leather and toasted oak and light tannins. Flavors are consistant with the aroma. Winery notes say some vanilla and other trace aromas/flavors, but I'm not getting it. I don't think it's that complex. It's comparable, really, to a young, basic Chianti.  Pair this one with pork chops or your favorite brand of hard cheese and crackers. $16 1 Note

Casalino’s 2005 Riserva offers up classic Old World Sangiovese with its deep garnet color and herbaceous aroma to include, perhaps, a tart cherry note in the nose. Flavors include mother earth, tart cherry cobbler, and some black pepper. The last five years have been good to this wine as it has a medium-bodied, smooth, and silky feel in the mouth and a solid finish. This paired superbly with our dinner of chicken with Italian herb marinara and sun dried tomatoes. I don’t think I could have paired it better actually. I think the fact that it was a fuller-bodied Chianti (being a Classico Riserva) lent a more harmonious blending of the wine and the marinara. A young Chianti may have been to light. At any rate, this is a great value at $15, however, Total Wine has it on sale currently for $13. Highly recommended
