Cockburn's Port -1970 (WE-33818)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Ruby color, with just a hint of brick at the rim. Mouthfilling red berries and plums, finishing with chocolate and peppery spice. Overall, it’s a bit austere, but pretty, and capable of another decade or two of further aging. Drink or hold. 1 Note

Cockburn's Port -1955 (WE-33819)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Slightly deeper and richer in color than the 1947, featuring rich cassis aromas, violets and dried spices. It’s wonderfully rich in the mouth—expansive and mouthfilling, yet not lacking at all for nuance or complexity. Tannins are resolved, but the wine is still sturdy and holding well. Drink now or, based on the strength of the ’27, hold up to 20 more years. 1 Note

Cockburn's Port -1977 (WE-33820)

Profile Image

The 1977 vintage was not officially declared by Cockburn’s—this sample was from a small stock of 1,000 bottles that was not released commercially. According to Côrte-Real, the staff at Cockburn’s felt that ’77 was “not as great as people thought.” The company also had ample supplies of the 1975 in the market, which also may have influenced the decision not to declare. Based on the showing of this bottle, it was a big mistake. Ruby-colored, with only traces of brick and a nose of exuberant fruit joined by toffee and floral elements, you can tell immediately this is special. In the mouth, it’s very supple and elegant, what Côrte-Real describes as “a little feminine. Not exactly in the house style.” Drink or hold. 1 Note

Cockburn's Port -1994 (WE-33822)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

This seems lighter in weight than expected, despite an impressively dark, saturated color. Lots of cherries and dried spices on the palate, along with aromas of walnuts and smoked meat. “Passing through some middle-age disturbances,” as Côrte-Real said, or just very good Port, not great? Hold. 1 Note

Cockburn's Port -1995 (WE-33823)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Cockburn’s purchased this property in 1989. Historically, grapes from Canais accounted for approximately half of the blend in Cockburn’s vintage Port, and Côrte-Real describes the ’95 Canais as “very much Cockburn.” The color is a dark saturated ruby, the aromas combine meat, chocolate and plum. Côrte-Real says that the vintage was even hotter than ’94 during harvest and fermentation, and some of that shows in the finished wine’s hint of raisined fruit. Creamy, ripe tannins and a hint of pepper mark the finish. Hold. 1 Note

Dark, close to inky in color. Intense, youthful aromas of plums and berries are firmly backed by a chocolaty core. Soft and full in the mouth, the masses of ripe fruit make this wine almost approachable. Hold a few more years, and try it in 2009. 1 Note

Cockburn's Port -2001 (WE-33827)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The blackest, inkiest wine of the tasting, it’s incredibly rich and dense. Round and mouthfilling, packed with mixed berries and chocolate. The vintage’s flesh is obscuring the wine’s structure for the moment, but this should age magnificently. Drink 2011–2040. 1 Note

Aromas of raisins lead to sweet fruit and intense ripe flavors. The wine has richness but the main impression is of smoothness and softness, along with sweetness. Quinta do Infantado Port -2007 (WE-106514)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A charming, easy style of wine, with ripe black berry fruits, lifted with red plum skins. While it is not big, the tannins do give a firm, tight structure. Not for aging, it is already well balanced. 1 Note

A spectacular improvement on the 2003 vintage, this is a solid wine, all the elements in place. There is a tannic base on which all the dense black fruit and sweet acidity is piled, finishing with opulent ripeness. 1 Note
