Somewhat in the same tight, austere, guarded mode as the winery’s Bordeaux blend, this cabernet franc breathes slowly into elegant complexity. Spicy, compact blue and red fruits are lightly accented with sweet spice. 1 Note

Dark as night, with aromas of brick dust, kirsch and black fruit. Don’t expect anything like French Cab Franc from this Chilean monster. It’s huge and fully directed toward blackberry and cassis. Which means the herbal, leafy, tobacco notes common to CF are simply not present here. But if you like yours big and burly, with crusty dark fruit, then this is your ticket. 1 Note

An easy, soft wine, with well-ripened blackcurrant, tobacco and sweet cured olive flavors. Feels gentle in the mouth. Yet it’s not flabby. The tannins and acids are ripe, and provide good balance to the rich flavors. 1 Note

Made from Cabernet Franc, this is not as good as the Blanc de Blancs version of Trésor (not available in the United States). But it still has a good onion-skin color, a fresh raspberry character, and a good poise and lightness. Imported by Kobrand. 1 Note

This little-sung (outside of Washington) winery makes an eagerly-awaited rosé of cabernet franc each spring, but here is the real deal. One hundred percent varietal, it puts the lie to the notion that cabernet franc must be tannic and tough. Here it is fragrant, firm and tart, with spicy apple, plum, date, fig and even golden raisin flavors. Interested, complex and beautifully crafted, without obvious oak and just 13 percent alcohol. 1 Note

A round wine with aromatics of tobacco, mint, black fruit and coffee. In the mouth, there’s a plethora of juicy black cherry and plum, followed by a wholesomeness that really earns the wine its stars. A very good Chilean red with its own identity. 1 Note

I’ve long thought Cab Franc is a secret strength of the Foothills. This bottling is dry, balanced and complex, with a rich earthy, coffee streak to the cherry flavors. It’s a bit sharp, and could soften with a year or two of aging. 1 Note

The nose and palate of this fruit-forward Cab Franc (with an added splash of Merlot) is lush with sweet ripe red plums, spice and a hint of char. It’s easy drinking but a bit broad and lacking in intensity or zing. 1 Note
