Excellent notes of dark berries with a nose of cassis and lavender. On the palate it is a rush of young red fruit which seamlessly transforms to black cherry and plum. Silky smooth and luckily have another bottle waiting to be uncorked! 1 Note

This is a big wine. It has an ABV of 15.1%, which gives it a really thick viscosity. There are tons of dusty black fruit juice components on the nose with hints of smoke and charcoal, and a very subtle touch of herbs and flowers. On the palate I'm instantly hit by slightly deflated blackberry and black currant juice (it's strong but not in a way that really captures my attention), which moves into a kind of smoky, almost chicory-like flavor that eventually fades off into an herbal finish that lasts quite a while. This wine is really thick and full, it's almost creamy, but the alcohol shows through a little too strongly for my tastes and I think it is a hair disjointed and the fruit is a little off.
Overall, not bad, but for $24 (at the winery) there is no way that this is a good buy. There have got to be thousands of cabs with better structure than this for nearly half the price. Just Not Worth It.

Santa Maria Cellars Mourvedre -2005

The first thing that I noticed about this wine was its peculiar orange cast, that made me think more of Sangiovese than of Cabernet Sauvignon. The very first thing I notice on the aroma is a lush blackcurrant note coming from the Cabernet Sauvignon, but after that, almost everything that I detect on the nose indicates Mourvedre. There is a dark chocolate cherry aroma, buttery caramel, coffee beans, and a faint citrus flower note. The flavor is rich with raspberries, sugar cane, dark caramel tones and chocolate, with blackberry, granite, and forest floor notes giving the wine multiple dimensions. There is a lot of layering to this wine’s complexity, but like the nose, the palate strongly shows the Mourvedre more than the Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has excellent acidity that is like biting into a fresh red berry, coupled with this really nice limestone, mineral finish. There is a lightness about this wine but it also manages to be very intense at the same time. I like this wine quite a bit. It has the intense, rich flavors of Mourvedre and the firm backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon, really capturing the best of both grapes. It’s unique, it’s elegant and refined, and it's a steal at $20.
