Arcs Carignane -2004 (WE-49023)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Violet in color, with burnt rubber, cherry and plum on the lively nose. Things go south from there, however, as the palate is too snappy and austere to support the flavors. It’s 90% Carignan and much like a tart Italian Dolcetto. Imported by Hand Picked Selections. 1 Note

Mazzocco Carignane -1997 (WE-1495)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A rich and gutsy red made from a rarely seen varietal—the vines are 85 years old—and what a treat it is. There are warm chocolate and red cherry tones leading to a medium finish with vivid closing fruit. Yummy wine all the way. 1 Note

Gnekow Carignane -2000 (WE-20597)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Any century-old vines that remain in California must be paid attention to. This wine celebrates a varietal usually thought of as inferior. But the wine is intense and thought-provoking. It’s dark in color and in tone, with flavors of plums, black cherries and dark chocolate, and very dry. It’s too soft in acidity, and would earn extra points if it were crisper. But it’s a fascinating character study. 1 Note

Lolonis Carignane -NV (WE-16183)

They have a lot of old-vine “minor” varietals left in Mendocino, and this wine comes from some of them. It’s probably as good as a Carignane can be, rustically tannic and earthy, bone dry, with piercing acidity and peppery-berry flavors. It’s an honest California vin de pays. —S.H. 1 Note

Husch Carignane -2002 (WE-34971)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Cabernet-like in weight, tannins and full-bodiedness, but without the elegance and finesse. The blackberry, cassis and coffee flavors are ripe, while the wine is totally dry. A bit coarse, but has an earthy charm. 1 Note

Ridge Carignane -1996 (WE-5954)

Interesting aromas of blackberry and blueberry, with smoked meat. A juicy red wine, dry and tasty. Fairly neutral in flavor, but has some complexities in the structure. Not a great wine, but a good one. 1 Note
