A touch stewy and bulky, but still a positive wine from a good if now old vintage. Plum and cherry fruit on the palate seems ripe, and the finish is properly dry. A bit high in acidity, but still good in terms of mouthfeel. 1 Note

Leathery and rustic, with a hint of bramble and leather on the bouquet. The palate is full-throttle, with lively plum, blackberry and chocolate notes, with sweet accents of cola and wood. A substantive wine, one that turns creamy on the finish. 1 Note

Starts out a touch brambly, with tart-fruit aromas. The body is big and the tannins lively and hard, but the flavors work out in the end as the wine settles on berries and rusticity. 1 Note

Definitely a Carmenère, which you can tell from the olive and herb nose and the plump, jammy palate that contains red plum, olive and chocolate flavors. Shows juicy acidity. Nothing wrong with this wine, just basic. Imported by Vineyard Brands. 1 Note

Carmenere is popular in Chile, less so in this country, although that's changing. This Cabernet-like wine is inky black, and opens with big gooey aromas of blackberry jam, dark honey, smoky vanilla and a rich earthiness. It tastes simply grand, with enormously extracted blackberry flavors, hugely rich and complicated, but bone dry. Try it with rich foods like braised oxtails or barbecued ribs. 1 Note

One of the most consistent value Carmenères from Chile is always TerraNoble’s, and this ’05 doesn’t disappoint. The bouquet oozes black fruit, coffee and spice notes, while the palate is poised and tasty: the blackberry, plum and cola flavors are rock solid. Finishes warm and plush, with just a mild herbal edge. 1 Note

Rich and concentrated for an entry-level wine, with earthy, bold aromas and a lush, well-balanced palate feel. Deep and sweet in terms of flavor, with a mix of ripe black fruits and herbs. Shows a bit of faux oak flavor on a mocha-tinged finish. Exemplary for this price range. 1 Note

Round and ultra oaky on the nose, with creamy mocha aromas. The palate and finish follow suit, meaning a creamy oak feel and flavor dominate. Along the way it’s all vanilla, mocha and candy. Smooth and creamy but where’s the character? 1 Note

Granted, the nose deals a full blast of Carmenère’s typical tomato, olive and peppery aromas, but the body is just right and the palate features some core fruit that’s dark, ripe and rippled with proper tannins and acidity. Anyone curious about Carmenère will be well served starting here. 1 Note
