Guenoc Claret -2008 (WE-133046)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A pleasantly drinkable, rich Claret out of Lake County’s Guenoc, moderate in alcohol (13.5%) with cranberry, raspberry and chocolate on the nose and intermingled with the vanilla and cinnamon from the oak, half of it American. A fine addition to the backyard barbecue. 1 Note

Basel Cellars Claret -2007 (WE-111083)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

All five Bordeaux grapes go into this light, fruity blend. It has the color and mouthfeel of Grenache—light and open, with pretty red fruits. The only distraction is a chalkiness around the acids. 1 Note

Robert Karl Claret -2007 (WE-111379)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Rich, smooth and balanced, with the sort of dusty chocolate mouthfeel generally associated with much pricier Bordeaux blends, this is the winery’s salute to the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. A five-grape blend, loaded with cherry pie fruit flavors, it finishes with a streak of mocha and caramel woven through fine-grained tannins. 1 Note

Robert Karl Claret -2008 (WE-131021)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is a delicious rendition of the annual Claret blend. It includes all five Bordeaux grapes, and displays a generous burst of berries and cherries, followed with a swish of chocolate. The wine delivers the goods, mixing in darker fruits, coffee and licorice streaks, winding into a lightly herbal, tannic finish. 1 Note

Basel Cellars Claret -2008 (WE-130964)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A step forward in this vintage, with a pretty nose offering blackberry and truffle notes. Flavors are a mix of fruit and herb, dried leaf, tea and cherry tobacco. It grabs your attention, then thins out a bit too quickly in the finish. But lots of potential, and probably a good chance to improve over the next couple of years. 1 Note

Matthews Estate Claret -2006 (WE-109125)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The complex blend of Bordeaux grapes does not quite jell into a wine with specific focus. It’s dark and tastes of black cherry, with grainy tannins and a chalky finish. The acids are not well integrated and the wine seems disjointed in the finish. 1 Note

Abacela Claret -2006 (WE-117491)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Two thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, with the other Bordeaux grapes filling in the rest. Though this 2006 vintage was held back for some time to allow for extra bottle age, this is still a hard, tannic wine that requires decanting. The build-out is well done, tannins firm and moderately ripe, fruit flavors Bordeaux-like. Right now it’s a bit monolithic, tasty enough, but without the textural interest that most Abacela wines display. 1 Note
