Just north of Richmond, Virginia is James River Cellars where upon first impressions, I was not impressed, but some of the best wines come from the most humble places. We tried several whites, but their Gewurztraminer was THE most outstanding. It was a Gold Medal winner at the Virginia Wine Lovers tasting. The best compliment I can give this wine is that if I were to do a blind tasting against German versions, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. This wine has a floral, spicy aroma, which is brilliant on the nose. The flavors are rich with tropical fruits of pineapple and a bit of mango with some orange and nice floral accents of rose. Quite complex. It's medium bodied with crisp acidity. The first pairing that comes to mind would be a yellow curry chicken dish from your favorite Thai restaurant. I was surprised at the complexity of this Virginia wine. All wines at James River are produced and bottled right there at the winery. Very much recommended: www.jamesrivercellars.com 1 Note

A little too thin for me. I like Gewurz with power and viscosity. I want lychee motor oil, and this is more like the sweat on the outside of a lychee martini glass. That said, this is perfectly pleasant, easy-drinking wine. 4 Notes

At $10 a bottle this is one of the best Gewurtztraminers that I have tasted and I have been on a tasting panel that looked at traminette which is similiar to Gewurtztraminer. It is not as spicy as some Gewurtztraminers, but makes up for this flaw with a wonderful floral bouquet and smooth crisp taste. Pairs well with baked chicken or pork chops.
