Fetzer Merlot -1999 (WE-8916)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

This entry-level Merlot offers correct plum, black-cherry, toast and smoke aromas. Similar flavors follow, with a soft mouthfeel, but it’s not a rich wine. There are no hard tannins, but tangy acids seem to come up on the back end, where it finishes dry, with a dusty cocoa note 1 Note

From Chalone’s second label. A perfectly acceptable wine with lots of up-front fruity flavors and quite a bit of elegant structure for this price. It’s dry, round and supple, and has a surprising edge of quality and depth. You have to hand much of the credit to the excellent vintage, which aids all wines, not just expensive ones. 1 Note

Pretty cherry and herb flavors course through this medium-bodied Merlot. Tannins are a trifle coarse, but the ensemble makes a pleasing quaff. 1 Note

De Martino Merlot -1999 (WE-8234)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

There’s not much point in making a reserve-style wine if the barrels are subpar. Aggressive menthol and sappy green-barrel aromas and flavors dominate this wine. There’s good weight and texture, just not much in the way of vinous flavor. 1 Note

Robert Mondavi Merlot -1998 (WE-5458)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Has decent black cherry and plum aromas, and some richness on the palate. Dry and spicy, with fairly ripe fruit and a clean, mildly tannic finish. It’s not complex or oaky, but it’s a fashionable wine, and reasonably inexpensive. 1 Note

Corbans Merlot -1999 (WE-8475)

Black cherries, dried herbs and a hint of toast make for a flavorful mouthful. Fleshy without being soft, thanks to vibrant acidity that will cut through rich meat dishes. No tannins to speak of, so there’s no need to wait before popping the cork on this one. 1 Note

Aromas of dark berries with lots of herb and oak accents. Good cherry and plum flavors, both tart and sweet, with a strong herbal element and a good mouthfeel. Has decent length and medium tannins. 1 Note

Indigo Hills Merlot -1997 (WE-1605)

Plummy and chocolaty. Chunky and full-bodied, it’s a little rough around the edges, but quite satisfying. Yes, it’s low-acid, but there are enough soft, dusty tannins to keep it from being flabby. Best Buy. 1 Note

Blackstone Merlot -1997 (WE-2062)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

If the pronounced oak becomes integrated down the road, this will prove to be a good value because there’s a lot of blackberry and some chocolate flavors. It bites a bit from the 14.1% alcohol, but there’s enough acidity to carry the wine. Hold for a year to see where it goes. 1 Note

Chumeia Merlot -2003 (WE-50557)

There’s a leathery, sweaty aroma and taste here that’s not very pleasant. The wine is also disagreeably sharp. 1 Note
