Rich and silky, this wine is full of very soft, sweet fruit. It has the texture of treacle, dense but without any sense of tannins. The dusty, superripe fruit (14.5% alcohol) makes it very enticing, but the structure and the acidity seem to have disappeared. Not imported. 1 Note

Flavorful, uncomplicated Pinotage showing good depth of fruit with solid berry and tart cherry flavors. Leather and metallic notes creep in towards the finish, but don’t predominate. A good basic version of this South African Pinot Noir-Cinsault hybrid. 1 Note

Voluptuous and elegant but still true to the rustic nature of Pinotage, this is a true expression of South African terroir. Sweet black currant, licorice and cool-climate-derived mint mingled with smoke and spice create dimension and depth. The finish is firm and a touch edgy—again, a Pinotage characteristic. 1 Note

A beautiful example of 100% Pinotage. Gorgeous aromas of cassis, black berry and plum abound from this deep red wine. Firmly structured but approachable with the potential to age gracefully another three to five years. Unsweetened cocoa and concentrated dark fruit linger through the lengthy finish. 1 Note

Crisp, fruity and likeable, this full-bodied Pinotage rosé is a great value and will pair well with almost any food. The Pinotage adds spice and body to the berry flavors and the mouthfeel is rounded without being heavy. A good, lasting finish adds to the mix. Another example of the good quality, affordable wines coming out of this category. 1 Note

A fresh, zippy nose of lemon and strawberry is followed by clean, delicate flavors of apple and strawberry on the palate. Vibrant and balanced by minerality, the wine is a great bargain. 1 Note

Tasty, solid Pinotage fruit here is nicely wrapped in oak. The tart berry flavors will pair well with lamb or game. Shows surprising substance and good back end grip, with some tannins to lose. Would be interesting to try in two years, too. 1 Note

Rich, juicy Pinotage from Aussie Linley Schultz, über-winemaker at Distell. The grape’s harder-to-handle elements are neatly restrained, becoming interesting accents here. Displays a ripe feel, dark fruit with Bordeaux-like tobacco shadings, and a smooth finish. More renditions like this will expand the grape’s possibilites and make it more friends. 1 Note
