Oracle Pinotage -2002 (WE-32748)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Rich, juicy Pinotage from Aussie Linley Schultz, über-winemaker at Distell. The grape’s harder-to-handle elements are neatly restrained, becoming interesting accents here. Displays a ripe feel, dark fruit with Bordeaux-like tobacco shadings, and a smooth finish. More renditions like this will expand the grape’s possibilites and make it more friends. 1 Note

A very pretty, balanced nose of fresh fruit and flowers, and a flavor profile of good, balanced strawberry fruit and acidity make this wine suitable for everyday drinking and pairing with salads, poultry and fresh fruit. Out of Africa Pinotage -2002 (WE-32701)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Tasty wine similar to a basic Bordeaux. The very dry tart berry fruit wears a dose of earthiness, but it comes off less overtly South African as the iron-iodine element is suppressed here. As such, it’s less typical of its origins. Putting whether that’s a plus or minus aside, it should afford the wine wider mainstream appeal. 1 Note

KWV Pinotage -1999 (WE-8626)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Smoke, game and leather accent the sweet berry fruit. The medium-weight berry-cherry palate shows the characteristic earthy—some say horsey—quality of the Pinotage grape, a Pinot Noir/Cinsault hybrid. Opens with airing to reveal a licorice note. Finishes tart and smoky. 1 Note

False Bay Pinotage -2000 (WE-11085)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This light- to medium-weight red is an interesting marriage of grapes. The palate feel is soft and the fruit sweet, yet dry, with the Pinotage’s (78%) earthy rusticity offsetting the neo-Australian jamminess of the Shiraz (22%). The finish of this fairly unique easy drinker turns more brisk, with more of the dry fruit and earth, plus some pepper notes and mildly tangy tannins. —M.M. 1 Note

Malan Pinotage -1999 (WE-14572)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Berry, rhubarb and cocoa show on this flavorful red’s deep nose. It’s even and lithe in feel, with substantial tart berry flavors offset by more cocoa notes and earthy accents. As in their Sauvignon Blanc, Malan displays a deft winemaking touch, allowing the handsome depth of fruit to shine, showing good extraction and balance. Drink now through 2004. Best Buy. —M.M. 1 Note

Fairvalley Pinotage -2004 (WE-63488)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The Fairvalley Workers Association was founded in 1997 by workers from the Fairview Wine & Cheese Estate with funds from Fairview’s owner Charles Back and the South African government. This young Pinotage (the first was in 2001) is a standout. Plush and inviting, modern and sexy, it has deep aromas of berry, plum and barnyard nuanced with lemon and spice. There are pure fruit flavors of plum and berry, and hints of leather and spice to add character. This wine shows what Pinotage can be. 1 Note

Nederburg Pinotage -2004 (WE-68442)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This Pinotage goes the classic route and embraces the upfront, somewhat eccentric character of the grape well. Pepper, spice and a dry finish mingle with a smoky overall aroma and flavor, and though the wine has a touch of angularity and kick, with grilled meat or spicy dishes, it will pair well. Imported by Dreyfus Ashby & Co. 1 Note
