Beresan Sémillon -2008 (WE-128324)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This canary yellow Sémillon is always estate grown and 100% varietal. An imposing 14.2% alcohol, this exudes a complex bouquet of beeswax, lemon curd and honey. Rich and thick, yet dry and persistent, it brings together suggestions of grain, citrus and tropical fruits. 1 Note

Desert Wind Sémillon -2006 (WE-79624)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Given a moderate 10 weeks of aging time in American oak barrels, this lightweight Sémillon acquires a bit more impact than the winery’s Bare Naked (all-stainless) bottling. The fruit is still thin and generic, but the barrel time adds some much-needed heft to the finish, and takes the edge off the phenolics. 1 Note

Desert Wind Sémillon -2006 (WE-79625)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is 100% varietal, all stainless steel-fermented, and finished at a healthy 14.7% alcohol. The alcohol outstrips the fruit, which is light and generic. The dominant impression is alcoholic heat and some bitter phenolics. 1 Note

Spangler Vineyards Sémillon -2006 (WE-70618)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The winery lists this as having just 12.1% alcohol but 2.5% residual sugar, and it tastes like it. If you think Sémillon is well-served by such sugary flavors, this is the wine for you. But it’s not sweet enough to qualify for a dessert wine, so it’s really stuck in an off-dry style. 1 Note

L'Ecole No. 41 Sémillon -2005 (WE-64306)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Fans of the winery’s “Barrel Fermented” Sémillons, note—this is the one, but that term has been dropped from the label. It’s now about 15% new oak, down from 40% in past years. Fourteen percent Sauvignon Blanc is in the blend. It’s a very clean, very fresh style; perhaps a bit less creamy and rich than the last couple of years, but absolutely delicious. Consistent flavors of nettle, lime, grapefruit and melon; lovely balance and a bit of heat in the finish. 1 Note

L’Ecole’s budget bottling blends in 14% Sauv Blanc, making a brilliant, creamy, rich and textural wine which softly suggests nettle, lime, grapefruit, tangerine and citrus. 1 Note

Fresh figs and citrus characterize this blend of 85% Sémillon and 15% Sauvignon Blanc from some top Columbia Valley vineyards. Sur lie aging adds a creamy concentration, and malolactic fermentation cuts the acids. Good winemaking adds up to a beautiful bottle at a fair price. 1 Note

Simon Hackett Sémillon -2000 (WE-14011)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Brightly fruity on the nose, with notes of lemon, anise or pine, and pear nectar. It’s weighty on the palate—thick and almost syrupy—yet the flavors are lemon and beeswax. The long finish is tart and very resinous. This distinctive style of wine may not be for everyone. 1 Note
