Very yellow coloring paves the way to aromas of dusty newsprint and meat juices. Dig deep to find light citrus fruit that carries to the palate with a dose of eucalyptus. Its odd notes are slightly more acceptable than the lack of body and focus. —K.F. 1 Note

It’s 100% Sémillon, 100% barrel fermented—and it’s 100% obvious that the two preceding statements are true. Snyman describes this white as a science experiment of sorts—“everything we could play with, we played with”—including 14 different yeasts and 10 barrel types. Mallowy cream and caramel aromas elbow out white peach flavors on the nose. Nutty peach pit, toast and tropical fruit flavors come to a dried herb-and-mineral point on the back end. 750 cases produced. 1 Note

A blend of 90% Sémillon enhanced with 10% Klipsun vineyard Sauvignon Blanc. Golden yellow and softly oxidized, it is made in a fully barrel-fermented style, in 50% new oak, yielding a buttery, toasty wine with details from the extended barrel time. It’s undeniably flavorful, but what is sacrificed is fruit freshness and most of the varietal character. 1 Note

Gold in color, with a heavy, mature, resiny nose. But just when you think it’s over the hill and overoaked, the palate offers acidity and character. Flavors of apple, melon and spice are barrel-influenced, while acidity props up the finish. Drink now; contains 10% Chardonnay. 1 Note

This Ohio Semillon offers toasted flavors and an overall soft and subtle character. Notes of vanilla and fig, paired with butter, are flavorful, but the wine could use a bit more body. Serve with goat cheese or chicken in a white cream sauce. 1 Note

Smells a bit like New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, with strong capsicum and grapefruit components; also some toast notes. Broad and fat in the mouth, yet there are more green pepper flavors and a harsh, woody finish. 1 Note

Lushly aromatic, with scents of cream, vanilla, smoke and toast. Which might lead you to think it’s been aged in oak—but it hasn’t. Grapefruit, peach and cream flavors lead into a mouthwatering, lemony finish. It’s a bit austere on the palate yet; give it a few years in the cellar to round out. Best Buy. 1 Note

This variety doesn’t have much of an identity in California, and this wine doesn’t clarify things. It’s very dry and clean and austere in citrus fruits, with a wash of fig, sort of like a Sauvignon Blanc. 1 Note
