Beckett's Flat Sémillon -2003 (WE-45610)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Has an odd green aroma, like capers. On the palate, this Sem offers soft peach and guava flavors, and a green, herbal note. Doesn’t taste very late harvest, either—especially compared to other Oz sweeties. Imported by Abarbanel Wine Company. 1 Note

Mitchell Sémillon -2004 (WE-51315)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

I really like most all of Andrew Mitchell’s wines, but this one, while good, came up short for me. It has closed peach, pineapple and apple flavors, and a slightly mealy texture. Aromas are meaty and appley, too. Imported by Click Wine Group. 1 Note

Deetlefs Sémillon -2007 (WE-104614)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A delighful, alluring white with aromas of orange, lemon and honey, and creamy honey and white fruit flavirs on the palate. The elegant waves of flavor are balanced by some acidity, but the mouthfeel is still luxuriant. It all ends with a spicy flair. Pair with creamy cheeses, poultry, salads. 1 Note

Kemblefield Sémillon -2004 (WE-55165)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Slightly nutty and leesy on the nose, followed by a medium-bodied, peach and orange-flavored midpalate. Turns very citrusy and tight on the finish, much like some Hunter Valley Sémillons. Not imported in the U.S. 1 Note

L'Ecole No. 41 Sémillon -2008 (WE-105009)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

One of three Sémillons in L’Ecole’s portfolio, this includes 11% Sauvignon Blanc in the blend. It shows rich, ripe pear and melon fruit flavors, lightly spicy, with classic varietal grip and mid-palate richness. The impression of lanolin is unmistakable. 1 Note

L'Ecole No. 41 Sémillon -2007 (WE-89651)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This Sémillon is quite dry, with an unusual mouthfeel that is a bit like chewing on beeswax, honeycomb without the sweetness of honey. It’s a beautifully scented wine with a beguiling mix of floral and spice, suggestions of cinnamon, baking spice and body powder. Following on the palate are firm yet supple flavors of melon, pear and hints of baked apple, gliding into a smooth and satisfying finish, which resonates with hints of buttered toast. 1 Note

L'Ecole No. 41 Sémillon -2006 (WE-76026)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This wine is formulaic in a good way; L’Ecole “owns” Sémillon in Washington, and it is hard to think of any winery in the country that does a better job with the grape. Aged sur lie in neutral oak, blended with 14% Sauvignon Blanc and put through malolactic for added creaminess, this is a delicious, rich and succulent wine that deftly mixes flavors of nettle, lime and melon with vanilla custard and a hint of butterscotch. 1 Note

Novelty Hill Sémillon -2005 (WE-74818)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is just about perfect Sémillon— the gorgeous fruit has more flesh and breadth with flavors suggesting ripe fig, melon and citrus. The use of oak is judicious and thoughtful; it adds grace notes without dominating. You can’t help but wonder why this grape remains such a novelty (except, ironically, at Novelty Hill!). It’s seductive, delicious and unique. 1 Note

Pepper Tree Sémillon -2006 (WE-67063)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Young Hunter Valley Sémillon is one of the most perplexing wines to evaluate, and I suspect that in 8–10 years’ time, my rating will seem overly stingy. Still, this light-bodied wine appears to lack depth, complexity and length, offering just some odd, resiny scents and waxy, citrusy flavors. 1 Note
