Margan Sémillon -1999 (WE-8106)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A prickly cactus of a wine that may yet blossom, given enough time. Piney, resinous notes on the nose, along with aromas reminiscent of scrambled eggs. Then the attack is sweet—almost cloying—before a strong sour-lemon flavor takes over on the finish. Bury this in your cellar for 10 years in the hopes that it will improve as dramatically as many other Hunter Valley Sémillons. 1 Note

Desert Wind Sémillon -2002 (WE-36164)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

An aggressive, alcoholic wine, it shows unusual dark gold tones and smells of hay and oak barrels. Spicy, oaky and hot, its 14.5% alcohol is felt as a burning sensation all the way down the throat. 1 Note

Barnard Griffin Sémillon -2001 (WE-16818)

Profile Image

Semillon, a highly undervalued, food-friendly white wine, does well in Washington when handled with care. Winemaker Rob Griffin makes one of the best; fermented and aged in French oak, it has a pretty nose of sweet pea, spice and toast. The fruit is ripe without being tropical, and it has the acid to do well with a variety of food choices. 1 Note

Fenestra Sémillon -2007 (WE-90577)

Soft and candied in Lifesaver pineapple and lemon flavors, this Sémillon has a grapeskin bitterness, which gives it a Chinese sweet-and-sour sauce taste. 1 Note

Nitída Sémillon -2003 (WE-37916)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A dry white with a smooth mouthfeel and some typical Sémillon waxiness to boot. Still, a strong, unyielding bell pepper quality detracts throughout. Closes clean with a slight grainy feel, but it’s just too green and lean. 1 Note

Hogue Sémillon -1999 (WE-13626)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

About a third of this wine is fermented in oak, and it’s enough to give it some vanilla in the nose to go with the fig and melon fruit. There are hints of grass and even anise as well, with the wine developing a bit of asparagus as it opens. 1 Note

From a Mendocino appellation just east of Anderson Valley, an easy-drinking white. It has pretty flavors of peaches, pears and nectarines, and is clean, with a swift, slightly sweet finish. —S.H. 1 Note

What a score! This is sexy semillon, kissed with honey and flowers, and supple with a round core of delicious, intriguing, complex fruits. Pear, apple, blood orange and more are wrapped in a thoroughly delicious, well-rounded mid-palate, and the wine extends itself effortlessly into a lingering, delicious finish. Light enough to be food friendly, yet complex and wonderfully concentrated. 1 Note

Viu Manent Sémillon -2008 (WE-97123)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Peachy and a little sharp on the nose, but the palate is smooth and glides along nicely, and the flavors of citrus, honey and caramel are good and hold form through the finish. You can definitely taste the botrytis here, especially on the finish. Fresh and not at all funky. Drink now through 2013. 1 Note
