This unique, complex wine received mixed reviews. Some found the orange-pine-cardamom, sweet-and-sour plum package very appealing, while it was much less pleasurable (and too atypical) to others. Spice and orange elements play on the long finish. 1 Note

Fresh grapy aromas are mixed with cinnamon and vanilla, which carries over to the palate. Dark berry flavors are also present in the mouth, although they don’t mesh well with the oak notes, but seem to be dancing their own tune. Imported by Golden Kaan USA. 1 Note

Aromas of meat, toasted bread and molasses cover the prettier star anise and caraway wisps that accent thin strawberry and raspberry fruit. The red fruits and sweet spices show again on the palate. Tannins are smooth, if seemingly transparent. —K.F. 1 Note

Wyndham Estate Shiraz -2000 (WE-17774)

Very basic aromas are probably the best part. The mouth is thick and syrupy, and the flavors run toward prune. On the finish, oak gives off a coffee flavor, but there’s still a lot of sugar there. It seems a bit off the mark, with no real correlation between the aromas and flavors. —M.S. 1 Note

Aussie Shirazes have swept across the United States over the last decade, but many brands seem to have lost the quality edge that made them successful. Let’s hope the same doesn’t happen to this wine, which is only in its third vintage. It displays all the things we love about Shiraz—sweet blackberry fruit, lashings of vanilla oak and a lush, velvety texture. Bottlings like this are proof that importer Dan Phillips isn’t just about finding expensive microproduction wines, but that he also has an eye for value. 1 Note
