Quite an impressive effort. The dense purple hue promises much, as do the intense notes of grilled meat and coconut on the nose. The palate delivers, with complex black fruit aromas and wet earth flavors leading to a long, lush finish. A year or two in the cellar will give the American oak a chance to integrate but drink up before 2011. 1 Note

This is mostly Syrah, with small amounts of Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Grenache included. The Snake River Valley AVA crosses from Idaho into eastern Oregon; these are Idaho grapes as far as can be ascertained. The wine is tannic and well-made, with deeply-flavored, meaty fruit character. Wild berries and plums are suggested, with much darker streaks of coffee, licorice, smoke and earth. The alcohol (almost 15%) shows through in some residual heat. 1 Note

Violets coat the primary nose, while lilac and pencil-lead aromas come in later. A juicy palate of black raspberry and zesty plum skins is both racy yet satisfying as it suggests grilled meats as a pairing. A bit of fresh raisin on the finish confirms the wine's ripeness. 1 Note

Likable for its delicate mouthfeel, dryness and complex flavors, this blush wine shows raspberries and vanilla with nuances of apricot skin, thyme, cream-thinned mocha and sweet pie crust. Easy to drink, and elegant, too. 1 Note

Just barely acceptable as a table wine due to the unnatural cherry cough syrup flavors and insipid mouthfeel. They vinified it dry, but it still feels insipid, with very flat acidity. 1 Note

Some of our tasters found this Monterey offering tart and shrill, with strawberry and rhubarb flavors; others praised it for its dark fruit, olive and anise flavors. In the end, it’s a solid California red that might improve with a year or two of cellaring. 1 Note

Under a veil of skunk cabbage, there’s a wine waiting to emerge—but when it does, there’s not much to it. Bland, earthy and tart, with dull red fruit. Pass. 1 Note

This historic Sicilian estate is another protagonist when it comes to Syrah. Nadir is a surprisingly floral interpretation of the hearty grape with notes of herbal tea, rose petal and raspberry tea. It’s leaner in the mouth with soft tannins. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd. 1 Note

A rather earthy and closed wine, and pretty tannic, too. There are some blackberry flavors but the mouthfeel is tough, and the finish turns astringent. May benefit from five years of aging. 1 Note
