A Wine

Bonny Doon Syrah -2002 (WE-43559)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Leans toward the red-fruit side of the Syrah fruit continuum, with raspberry and strawberry flavors strongly marked by herbal, peppery, menthol notes. Well made, but a bit too green for our tastes, with some hard tannins on the finish. 1 Note

You’ll get tons of upfront cherry, blackberry and jammy black raspberry fruit in this simple, likeable wine. It’s dry, with a nice bite of tannins and good balancing acidity. 1 Note

Columbia Winery Syrah -2001 (WE-42474)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Columbia pioneered syrah in Washington state, and still leads the pack at this price point. Smooth and varietal, it mixes ripe (not raisiny) fruit in a sleek, muscular wine laced with vanilla, smoked meat and tar. 1 Note

Roshambo Syrah -2004 (WE-50010)

Unusually dark and full-bodied for a rosé, this wine could almost be served at room temperature. It’s dry, with ripe, jammy cherry and black raspberry flavors, and a spicy, peppery finish. 1 Note

MontGras Syrah -2003 (WE-40794)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Ripe and seductive, and displaying raw power, pomp and quite a bit of charbroiled, dark character. Very fruity and alive, with crusty black plum and berry flavors. Fully tannic but not mean. Modernin style; really good. Imported by Palm Bay Imports. 1 Note

Roshambo Syrah -2003 (WE-39517)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Pretty dark and full-bodied, and strong, too, in powerful acids, spicy rose petal, dried herb and strawberry flavors and even a dusting of tannins. Try this dry wine with substantial foods, like bouillabaise. 1 Note

J. Lohr Syrah -2001 (WE-32415)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This enjoyable wine is soft and tasty, with blackcurrant, cherry, Indian pudding and herb flavors. It’s round and supple in the mouth, with sweet, easy tannins. Finishes with just a bit of acidity, and will be a perfect match for roast beef. 1 Note

Montevina Syrah -2001 (WE-33974)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This Syrah might strike you at first as austere, because the first impression is of moderated plums, herbs and tobacco. But that doesn’t take into account the balance, integrity and harmony that make it an ideal food wine. 1 Note

Bishop's Peak Syrah -2001 (WE-38599)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is a seriously good wine and how the parent company, Talley, sells it at this price is a miracle. Smells grandly Rhoniste, with a burst of white pepper, blackberry and leather. It doesn’t have the density of a supreme wine, but this great value showcases Central Coast Syrah. 1 Note

Jade Mountain Syrah -2003 (WE-46309)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Jammy and a bit bulky, this attempt at a Monterey Syrah from a brand that made its reputation in Napa is a bit of a disappointment. The big currant, plum and vanilla flavors are tasty, but lack depth and richness. 1 Note
