Lots of oak results in aromas of bacon, charred beef, cinnamon and heavy berry fruit. The wine is big and clangy, but not harsh. The flavors of berries mixed with greens and vanilla are nervy, while in the end the wine shows a solid mouthfeel and decent structure. 1 Note

Red licorice and cherry candy aromas blend with mint and grass to form a simple, candied, somewhat green bouquet. The palate delivers standard cherry and raspberry, while the finish is easygoing as it displays mild chocolate and vanilla touches. Imported by Santiago Ijalba, S.A. 1 Note

Sweet and funky smelling, with a weird set of aromas that suggest Middle Eastern spice and hard-to-gauge fruit. The palate feel is barely acceptable, while the flavors are jumbled and overtly spicy and strange. Maybe it’s the oak? Or maybe it’s just not very good wine. 1 Note

More oak than anything, with aromas of cinnamon, clove and char. The palate runs fairly sour, which confirms that wood cannot cure all ills. And the finish shows little love although there is ample spearmint and leftover resin. 1 Note

Quite candied and jumpy on the nose, what some might call bug juice. Having spent six months in American oak, it’s tight and tough on the palate, with fresh, juicy acidity that’s a bit scouring. Tastes much like milk chocolate and candied fruit. 1 Note

Given the high level at which Rioja is running these days, this green wine with aromas of pole beans and tobacco ash just isn’t up to standards. Balance and elegance are nowhere to be found. 1 Note

This mature red’s complex, enticing nose offers wood, spices, brown leaves and hint of funky mushroom-earth. It’s not weighty, but very aromatic and flavorful. The elements above continue to play out over a solid dried fruit core on the palate. Finishes beautifully with very good length and subtle spice notes. Drink now through 2008. —M.M. 1 Note
