Muga Viura -2007 (WE-90836)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Muga has crafted a steely, no-fat Viura (with 10% Malvasia), despite the wine being fermented in barrel. The nose is clean and passive, while the palate is crisp and tight but largely neutral in its delivery of apple and lemon flavors. From a cool vintage, this wine is like kissing the razor’s edge. Good stuff but limited in what it has in store. 1 Note

CVNE Viura -2007 (WE-89938)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The bouquet provides plenty of kick as well as a hint of acacia. The palate is dry and full of green apple and nuts. Remains dry and seltzer-like on the finish, where light citrus fills any voids. Not overly flavorful or complex, but a solid white Rioja for near-term drinking. 1 Note

Bodegas Palacio Viura -2008 (WE-129266)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Candied on the nose, with aromas of perfume and air freshener. Cheesy, cidery flavors control the palate, which is tangy and sharp. Feels oily and seems prematurely old. As good as this label’s 1894 barrel-fermented wine is, this is the opposite. 1 Note

Monopole Viura -2001 (WE-24779)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Plump yellow fruit comprises the backbone of this Viura; sweet, musky-floral aromas and flavors add interest. Medium-bodied; yellow fruit, mineral and resin bat cleanup. —D.M. 1 Note

Marqués de Murrieta Viura -2003 (WE-81821)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Lucid yellow in the glass, yet lightly oxidized on the nose. A spacy, unique Viura. There’s dry apricot and peach pit flavors, and the mouthfeel and acidity are impeccable. A treat for explorers; eschews all blueprints for modern white wine. 1 Note

Palacios Remondo Viura -2008 (WE-128167)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The 2008 vintage was cool and wet, which may explain this wine’s more abnormal green, vegetal qualities. The green stuff starts on the nose, which suggests canned peas. The palate is soft, round and tastes slightly of asparagus. It still shows nice feel and richness, but the flavors and aromas are underdeveloped. 1 Note

Palacios Remondo Viura -2006 (WE-78219)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The gold standard among Viura-based wines from Rioja has to be Placét from Palacios Remondo. Oak plays a big role here, and the nose wows with spice and cinnamon apple. There’s more ripe apple and spice in the mouth, along with excellent acidity and textural creaminess. A stately wine to drink with fish, veal and poultry. 1 Note

Las Brisas Verdejo -2007

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Las Brisas has a wide open, ripe array of fruity and grassy aromas that attack the nose on first sniff. In the mouth it is a bright, open, colorfully fruitful and refreshing white wine filled with gobs of ripe white fruits: green grapes, white peach, apricot, pear, granny smith apple, grapefruit, and lime-y citrus. Its juicy and crisp at the same time; it may as well be a glass of fruit salad. An excellent edge of acidity makes it a great match for white meats and seafood, and doubles as a thirst quencher. A slight touch of perceived peachy sweetness makes it a good foil for hot and spicy dishes. This is a great choice for a summer barbecue; also a great “segue” wine for those trying to escape white zindom and enter the world of real fine wine. 1 Note

Fuente Milano -2008

Profile Image

Stunningly impressive wine for the price (paid about $9). The 50/50 viura and verdejo is reminiscent of sauvignon blanc but with more citrus flavor.
