Here’s an everyday style Cab, with decent varietal character. It’s totally dry, with some scoury tannins and earthy, herbaceous flavors of red currants and cedar. 1 Note

When Beringer couldn’t find Zin in Napa Valley at a decent price, they turned to this little-known appellation to the east. It’s not bad. The grapes got ripe enough to produce Zin’s briary, peppery flavors, but the wine has a roughness it can’t overcome. These are mountain vineyards, at 2,300 feet, and the soils are volcanic, courtesy of the dormant volcano nearest to San Francisco. 1 Note

A junior version of the Private Reserve with many of the same qualities of opulently ripe tropical fruit, lavish oak and toast, and a rich, creamy texture. Of course, it’s not as massive as the PR, but is nonetheless a good wine. Loses one point due to astringency on the finish. 1 Note

Almost the perfect white wine for food. It’s rich in citrus, fig, spice and sweet herb flavors, with subtle oak flavorings, but this is a dry, balanced wine. Its acids and dusting of tannins will complement almost anything, even beef. 1 Note

Aromatic and pretty, a light, delicate wine that offers up plenty of flavor. White peach, honeysuckle, smoky vanilla, gingerbread, flowers and spices mingle in complex waves. Dry, but finishes with honeyed richness 1 Note

Textbook example of a charming, young, cool-climate Pinot that’s fresh and flavorful. Packs the cherry, white pepper, sweet tobacco, vanilla and smoky tastes into soft, creamy tannins backed by a burst of clean acidity. 1 Note
