Castello Banfi Syrah -1998 (WE-17326)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Syrah from central Tuscany? Sure. The ’98 version of Colvecchio, an offering from a hot year, is leaner than might be expected and short on dimension. It has lots of oak up front and an abundance of spicy, tart red fruit in the middle. The oak kicks up on the finish as well. The effort is there and the fruit seems sound, but tartness is the overriding impression it leaves. 1 Note

Castello Banfi Sangiovese -2000 (WE-26941)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Quite candied, with aromas of red licorice, cassis and boysenberry syrup. A true berry ball, with forward fruit, a sweet and easy finish, and mild tannins. Laudable for its zippy qualities, but could use more structure. 1 Note

This boasts thick, sun-drenched notes of mature fruit, intense spice and moist earth. The wine’s nose is slightly stewy in essence and has some medicinal qualities on the finish. Drink it with pasta and ground beef ragù. 1 Note

Castello Banfi Cabernet Sauvignon -1996 (WE-3163)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is a single-vineyard 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that’s dark as night and still closed up. It wants to be big, but the fruit is presently in the rear, and you have to search for it. Once you find it, it’s fairly clean cassis and blackberry, with pronounced oak backing it up. Nicely herbal and cool, the finish turns fairly tannic. Get after it next year. 1 Note

Castello Banfi Sangiovese -2005 (WE-98398)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Belnero is a new product from Castello Banfi that offers a pretty aromatic ensemble of blackberry, plums, prunes, wet earth, tobacco and spice. There’s a mature element to the fruit but it’s nicely integrated with the wine’s fruity freshness and acidity. This pretty Sangiovese-based wine shows many of the lovely characteristics of Brunello di Montalcino. 1 Note

Castello Banfi Sangiovese -2007 (WE-127567)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Belnero is a Sangiovese-based wine (with a tiny percentage of outside grapes) that shows loads of Montalcino typicity and elegance. If the rules governing Rosso di Montalcino are changed, those new wines might resemble Belnero. 1 Note
