Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay -2005 (WE-71870)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Soft and creamy, this is consistent with the previous vintage and sets the stage for the winery’s bigger, oakier single-vineyard Chardonnays. Mixed stone fruits, pineapple and an elegant, full-bodied mouthfeel make this particularly appealing for the price. It uses the oak judiciously, and avoids the overdone vanilla flavors that many inexpensive New World Chardonnays rely on. 1 Note

Crisp and spicy, with juicy apple and pear fruit flavor, this easy-drinking Chardonnay was aged sur lie in mostly used barrels. There’s a subtle suggestion of vanilla and butter woven into the finish. 1 Note

With about 6% Viognier in the blend, this tart, dry, racy take on Pinot Gris has unusual complexity. Crisp citrus and pear skin, green apple and lemon verbena roll across the palate. There’s a crisp minerality to the acids, and a clean, refreshing finish. 1 Note

There is a lovely textural quality to Cold Creek Vineyard Riesling, which supports the flavors of grapefruit and white peaches with a minerality through the back half. Offers good grip and a racy, tangy finish, despite its off-dry rating. 1 Note

The Horse Heaven vineyard has been producing exceptional Sauvignon Blancs for the past decade. In this unusual vintage, which started very cool and lasted through an extended, late harvest, the grapes ripened to perfection. Ripe, lush fruit gets some added creaminess from barrel fermentation and aging sur lie. There are scents of lime, citrus peel, wet stone and spice, leading to a wonderfully full, focused panoply of flavors in the mouth. The finish goes on forever. Best Buy. 1 Note

Another beautiful rendering of succulent Sauvignon Blanc from this premier vineyard, offering fresh, ripe fruit, scents of grapefruit, citrus peel, melon and lemon wax. There’s a nice, spicy lift to the palate, though thefinish is not quite as rich and extended as the incredible ’99. 1 Note

The same vineyard provides grapes for the winery's "Eroica" riesling project with Ernst Loosen. The differences are subtle, but the single vineyard version tastes a bit drier, more citric, and includes lovely hints of orange blossom and honey. 1 Note

A top vineyard for Riesling, and the source of much of the winery’s high end Eroica Riesling fruit. The ’01 is medium-dry and leesy, with flavorful richness accented by peach blossom, jasmine and a hint of stone. Best Buy. —P.G. 1 Note

Chateau Ste. Michelle Sauvignon Blanc -2004 (WE-64356)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is the designated vineyard for the winery’s top Sauvignon Blanc, but here it is merely good, not great. Half barrel fermented, half stainless steel is the approach, but somehow the fruit seems a bit dried out compared with the other bottling. Dried peas and green apple flavors, perhaps a whiff of cardboard, show; overall it’s a stony, bone-dry wine despite the addition of 15% Semillon. 1 Note
