Maybe Pinot Noir isn’t meant to be in Catalonia. This has a burnt nose, with medicinal cherry and cranberry aromas and flavors. Starts sweet then goes a bit raspy. Unusual. 1 Note

With some toast and popcorn to fatten up the standard apple aromas, this is a fairly rich cava, especially given the price. Apple, pear and cinnamon flavors grace the palate, while the finish is persistent beyond expectations. Not overly bubbly but still lively. Strides better than your average quaffer. 1 Note

The nose begins with wheat grass and chopped chive before folding in peach, clover and honey. The palate runs toward melon, pear and green herbs, while the finish is dry, crisp and perfectly solid. You’ll find plenty to like in this bubbly. The aromas are very refined and Champagnesque, with toast, lees, vanilla, spice, charcoal and a waft of citrus. The flavors are similarly of toast and mineral. This is not a fruit-driven wine. It’s a little rough around the edges; the bubbles are scoury, not refined. But the price is great, and it is a good value. Should be easy to find, with 90,000 cases produced. 1 Note

Pinot Noir-based cavas are touchy; sometimes they take on a rough, peppery personality that some might find offputting. This wine does that, but only to an extent. The nose pushes peach pit and campfire aromas, while the palate features dry fruits like papaya and melon, but with cinnamon and pepper shadings. Good mouthfeel and well made, but the flavors and aromas require some getting used to. 1 Note
