Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon -1997 (WE-3386)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Winemaker Doug Gore should be on everybody’s list of best winemakers in America, but the size and low price points of his ambitious lineup seems to preclude that. This is a tight, hard, tannic Cabernet, with chewy, almost tough red fruit, but plenty of stuffing to go the distance. It opens up beautifully in the glass. Best Buy. 1 Note

Columbia Crest Sémillon -1999 (WE-9503)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Columbia Crest always does a fine job with this budget grape. The accent is on green-apple and green-berry fruit, with suggestions of herb and spice filling in the flavor interest. It’s a high acid, food-ready wine that will accompany a wide variety of shellfish, oily steakfish and some cream-sauced pastas. 1 Note

The blend is half Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. A rich nose shows sweet, black cherry fruit; the wine has got big flavors that are nonetheless pretty, with soft, understated tannins and high acids. It adds up to a very accessible, delicious bottle of red. Best Buy. 1 Note

Columbia Crest Sauvignon Blanc -2006 (WE-75088)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is a waxy, rather soft rendition of Sauvignon Blanc, and the pretty fruit flavors mix grapefruit, citrus and pineapple. There is very little suggestion of Sauvignon Blanc’s herbal or grassy side; the grapes seem to have been ripened past that point, though not all the way to California-style, tropical fruit flavors. All in all this is a well-crafted, smooth and flavorful wine, with a portion barrel-aged for extra complexity. 1 Note

Big, bold, and buttery, with plenty of oaky micro-popcorn flavors. Don’t look for subtlety, but you get plenty of flavor. 1 Note

Columbia Crest Pinot Grigio -2006 (WE-75090)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Here again the Grand Estates bottling shows a softer, gentler side of the fruit; the acids seem to have been smoothed over. The fruit is ripe and clean, suggesting white peaches and green apples, but there isn’t much depth to it. 1 Note

Columbia Crest Chardonnay -2006 (WE-87013)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The Grand Estates Chardonnay from Columbia Crest is consistently the most broadly fruity, round and oaky wine in the lineup (outside of the much pricier reserve). Apple, pear and peach fruit dominates, and the sometimes too-present, tarted up flavors of butter and vanilla have been brought back into better proportion in this 2006 bottling. Sure to be a popular style, this is one of the best vintages in the past five years. 1 Note

Columbia Crest Merlot -2005 (WE-87014)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

The Grand Estates Merlot is a sure-fire Best Buy, as especially in a ripe, sweet vintage such as 2005. The color is pure and deep, and the soft midpalate offers ripe cherry and prune flavors. Streaks of coffee lead into somewhat earthy tannins that add structure to the finish. 1 Note
