Right out of the gate, this Shiraz may not push your buttons. Give it a few minutes to open up, though, and it offers attractive but restrained plum, cherry and iron-ore aromas and flavors. Gorgeous on the nose: clove, tree bark, black pepper and fruit that is still hibernating. On the palate, it’s sexy and layered, with meat accents to the plum fruit and a silky texture that trails on through the long, nut-laden finish. Nice now, but it’s still young. Drink 2007–2012. Aged mostly in American oak, which lends the nose crème brûlée and caramel aromas. What’s most prominent on the nose, though, is a dark meatiness—like beef jus. Black cherry fruit on the palate is juicy though restrained by a heap of chewy, gummy tannins that persist through the finish. Lip-smacking and delicious, but not at its best until after 2006. 1 Note
