M. Chapoutier Rhône-style Red Blend -2003 (WE-59838)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A simple, straightforward quaffer, with light red fruit scents and flavors and an herbal tinge--like cherries and strawberry compote. turns a bit dusty and drying on the finish, so best with rare beef. 1 Note

Profile Image

This Provençal red is light and thin, and lacks fruit depth. Surprisingly dry and tart, it shows a green edge that also detracts, and closes rather sharp. A rare mis-step from the usually dependable Chapoutier oragnization. 1 Note

Profile Image

Good concentrated fruit with fine, ripe, dusty southern herbs and spices. A slight hint of animal muskiness mars an otherwise solid, well-made and ripe wine. Drink now, or age over three or four years. 1 Note

Pulsating, penetrating and pure. The three Ps that guarantee quality are all on display, and the ripe fruit, chocolate and roasted plum flavors work wonders for what is, by all accounts, normally a standard-fare Côtes du Rhône. What bumps this up a couple of notches is the abundance of cola, raspberry and tannin, as well as some oak that props it up. 1 Note

M. Chapoutier Rhône-style White Blend -2005 (WE-59837)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is a broad, mouthfilling wine that just isn’t that expressive from a flavor perspective. There are hints of spice and minerality, including anise tinges, and hints of melon and pineapple fruit. But there’s just not that much intensity. More of a textural experience than a flavorful one. 1 Note

M. Chapoutier Syrah -1997 (WE-3944)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This broodingly dark Syrah features licorice, dark-skinned fruit and toasty-vanilla. Citrusy acidity keeps it somewhat crisp and lean. Could age well for 4-6 years. 1 Note

M. Chapoutier Syrah -1999 (WE-12233)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This Crozes-Hermitage caused some dissention among our panelists. While some reviewers found the nose “handsome and complex,” with dark chocolate, licorice, plum and hickory smoke aromas, one panelist criticized it as having a sour, manufactured Pixy-Stix quality. Comments on the mouthfeel ran the gamut from lean to full; most agreed, at least, that the palate showed tart blackberry, leather and licorice flavors. 1 Note

M. Chapoutier Grenache -2000 (WE-12599)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Dark and rather weighty, more of a light red in color and texture. After a rather mute nose, the even-yet gently grainy-palate shows wood over dry, mineral-tinged Grenache fruit, and the flavors extend to the medium long finish. It's an interesting exercise, but the wood and weight don't sing as lightness and liveliness might. 1 Note

As it should, the nose delivers rose petal, leather and pepper in classic Crozes style. The broad palate has more meat, spice and bacon than open-knit fruit, and the finish is broad and tannic. It’s harder and firmer than the competition. But it’s also tasty, expressive and should age well. —M.S. 1 Note

M. Chapoutier Rosé -2000 (WE-12600)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This pale-colored but aromatic and flavorful cherry and licorice-powered wine comes on strong. The fruit is intense, with an overtly sweet, candied quality that's offset by the prominent spicy anise streak. It has weight and a full, even texture on the tongue. Like Michel Chapoutier, this substantial wine displays a lot of personality. 1 Note
