Fragrant, with honeyed, creamy aromas that alert you to the richness to come. Flavors of melon and spiced apple precede a dry, light finish that fades away surprisingly quietly. At the end there’s a gap in continuity and then some bitterness. 1 Note

Leathery upfront, but in a friendly way, with touches of cherry fruit and briary notes alongside. It’s nicely complex, with a silky, almost Burgundian texture, yet you can feel the region’s sunshine in the warmth of this wine’s finish. 1 Note

Chapoutier’s biggest cuvée of Hermitage is the relatively affordable Monier de Sizeranne, a smoky, spicy rendition that’s a pretty classic rendition. Peppery notes accent the raspberry, cherry and red fruit flavors that finish with crisp acids. Nicely done, with silky tannins on the finish. Drink now–2015. 1 Note

Seemingly at its peak of maturity, although it should stay there for several years, this is a masterful Saint-Joseph, showing great complexity (flowers, pepper, smoke, cherries), ripe fruit and satin-textured tannins. Drink now-2012. 1 Note

This is a single- vineyard wine from the Chapoutier domaine. The fruit was at the extreme limit of maturity when picked, and this shows in the hugely ripe taste, the flavors of soft, juicy pears and the sense of power. There is new wood, but it does not dominate, and the final taste is of a dry, mineral character that suggests good aging potential. 1 Note

One reviewer calls it subtle and another calls it big-boned, and really, Les Granites is a bit of both. Its dusty, chalky tannins make for a glorious mouthfeel; underneath, there’s a host of juicy berry flavors that grip the midpalate and linger long on the finish. Closes with ripe tannins, and some espresso and black pepper. 1 Note

While the fruit—ripe, black and intense—gives this wine its power, there is also a huge core of toughness, that means it is going to be almost indestructible as it ages. Waiting is certainly the name of the game—20 years or more. 1 Note

Supple and silky in the mouth, with blackberry and cherry flavors bolstered by black olive and floral notes. What you get on the nose is similar—flowers, plus deep earth and berry flavors. Finishes long, with soft tannins and punctuated by a peppery-herb note. Drink 2005–2008. 1 Note

Based in the northern Rhône, Chapoutier’s Châteauneufs have not always been a strong suit, but the 2006 Barbe Rac rocks. Some stable-like notes on the nose add complexity to the bold cherry fruit, while stemmy, herbal notes bring even more nuance to the palate. It’s full bodied, soft and round, with a finishing texture somewhere between silk and velvet. Best from 2012–2020. 1 Note
