A Wine

Michel Torino Malbec-Merlot -2004 (WE-55519)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Chocolate and mint with the essence of coffee drives the bouquet. In the mouth, this Malbec-Merlot blend is ripe as can be, with cassis, blackberry and chocolate all making their mark. The finish is secure and mildly tannic, while the overall take is that this is a ribald, rich South American red. 1 Note

Michel Torino Sauvignon Blanc -2008 (WE-100370)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This yellowish SB from Argentina’s northern Salta region is a strange bird that has never caught our fancy. This vintage shows melon, peach, lychee and wax aromas, while the palate is both sweet and tart, with a fresh-for-now feel that doesn’t inspire confidence that it will last for long. Flat on the finish, and unsusual overall. 1 Note

Michel Torino Malbec-Merlot -2006 (WE-97434)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Mildly raisiny on the bouquet. The palate is round and full-bodied, with blackberry and roasted plum flavors backed by smooth tannins and a chocolaty, savory finish. Heavier and warmer than some red blends, but not clumsy or overdone. 1 Note

Michel Torino Fumé Blanc -2006 (WE-64400)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

There are fumé blancs that are oak-backed and others that aren’t. This one is the former. The nose is full of toast and vanilla, while the fruit is on the ripe, weighty side, with peach, melon and lemon flavors. Fairly rich in the mouth, with whetting acidity. 1 Note

Smells like a can of green beans, or maybe it’s canned peas. Either way, the nose is a siren call of what’s to come: celery, acid, lime, asparagus and canned peas. No thank you. 1 Note

Michel Torino Malbec-Merlot -2007 (WE-114663)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A funky, individual blend of Merlot and Malbec from the Salta region, with its ups and downs. The nose carries patented Salta aromas of herbs and green bean, but there’s berry scents and oaky mocha to offset that. The palate is forward and shows choppy tannins, while it tastes sweet, herbal and dark. As stated, this is a wine with virtues and pitfalls. 1 Note

Michel Torino Red Blend -2000 (WE-24955)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Huge and grapey, with a meaty, plum-packed palate that is over the top. The finish is equally round and large, and it’s loaded on the back end with bitter espresso. Try as you might, this one is tough to like. It just doesn’t have much harmony despite its top-shelf price. –M.S. 1 Note

Michel Torino Red Blend -2005 (WE-111663)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

A tough sell at this price. The nose is minty, green and smells of tobacco, spice and fern fronds, while the palate is tangy, clangy in feel and dry. Flavors of semisour, herbal cherry and plum are touched up by sweet oak, but overall it’s rather dry and scouring. 1 Note

Michel Torino Red Blend -2006 (WE-128196)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

A unique northern Argentinean blend made from Malbec, Cabernet, Bonarda and Tannat. It’s wide-bodied, with a lot of tannin and stewiness. In between, there’s tobacco aromas and flavors along with tomato, roasted berry, pastiness and rootiness. A deep, tannic load that requires grilled meat or cheese. 1 Note

Michel Torino Red Blend -2003 (WE-55838)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

Pitch dark in color, with a huge, oaky/earthy nose that cuddles deep black-plum fruit. Ultraripe and modern in style, with mounds of plum and blackberry flavors. Toasty and minty on the round finish. This is one rich wine; a massive improvement over the 2000 vintage, the last Altimus we rated. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd. 1 Note
