Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir -2007 (WE-102004)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This is showing a fair amount of oak influence at the moment, with smoky notes of cedar, mocha and brown sugar riding atop dark fruit flavors. Yet it’s supple and attractive, with a silky mouthfeel and a lingering finish. Drink it over the next several years. 1 Note

Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir -2001 (WE-27113)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

A perennial favorite, this year’s Pegasus Bay is no disappointment. Wisps of dried herbs add complexity to the black cherry aromas, with barrel-imparted hints of vanilla and dried spices buttressing the richly fruity flavors. Add a full, supple mouthfeel and a long, mouthwatering finish, and you’ve got all the ingredients for world-class Pinot Noir. 1 Note

Pegasus Bay Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot -1998 (WE-16047)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Profile Image

This blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc is ambitiously priced, but the quality is in the bottle. Next time you need a ringer for a right-bank Bordeaux tasting, here’s a perfect candidate. Dried spices and a smooth, rich texture are the only hallmarks left from two years of barrel aging—the mocha and black cherry fruit is rich and luscious, developing tobacco nuances on the moderately tannic finish. Drink now and over the next 10 years. 1 Note

Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir -1999 (WE-27086)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Although a fine wine when taken on its own, in the context of Pegaus Bay’s other wines, this is something of a let down. Either that, or it was in an awkward stage when we tasted it, showing some beet and cola notes but dominated by sweet, caramelly oak. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1 Note

Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir -2003 (WE-51023)

For Peg Bay’s high-end bottling, this is a bit of a disappointment. It offers dried spices and cherries on the nose, then adds sour cherry flavors on the palate. With time, darker cherry flavors emerge, showing a slight element of sur-maturité. It’s medium-bodied, with some firm tannins still in evidence. Hold through 2008 and hope for improvement. Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir -2006 (WE-108292)

Most Recent Tasting Note:

Still youthful, showing hints of toast and vanilla on the nose, this full-bodied yet elegant offering features flavors of tart cherries balanced by brown sugar. Give this velvety-textured Pinot Noir another year or two to settle down and integrate, then drink it over the next 4–6 years. 1 Note

Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir -2004 (WE-76581)

Full-bodied and surprisingly muscular for a Prima Donna, the 2004 features big plum and black cherry fruit, wrapped in hints of hickory smoke, mint and cola. Finishes with enough dusty tannins to suggest cellaring another year or two. Imported by Meadowbank Estates. 1 Note

Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir -2001 (WE-34501)

For the second consecutive release, I’ve rated Prima Donna lower than the regular Pinot from Peg Bay. Maybe it’s just more closed at this stage, or maybe I’m looking for something different in Pinot than this wine’s architects have in mind. It’s nice enough, offering plenty of spice and earthy complexity, but also a dark, brooding character reminiscent of coffee and dark chocolate. Try in 2008. 1 Note
