A jammy, highly extracted style, with bright berry fruit. Very tannic; it coats the palate with dusty, almost anesthetizing tannins, but seems to have the stuffing to age. 1 Note

Spicy up front, with full-throttle Bing cherry flavors. The wine fans out on the finish to reveal pleasing toast, spice, cola, herb, cedar and pepper flavors, with a lingering touch of oak. 1 Note

Zins from this vineyard are always big, ripe and exuberant. The challenge is to keep the wines elegant. In 2004, Joel Peterson had to struggle, for the grapes were enormously ripe. But he has managed to keep the overall balance, while retaining the vineyard’s key traits of gigantic wild berry fruit that fully merits the considerable oak overlay. 1 Note

In the mouth, chewy tannins, stewy blueberries, ink and a ripple of caramel run into dark fruit, char, chalk and a green-herb twinge on the back end. One whiff of its blackberry, blueberry and sinus-clearing black peppery bouquet and you’ll know what people mean when they call wines “black beauties.” It is brooding, chalky and has loads of tannin; a fellow taster compared it to a young Barolo. With that in mind, consider aging it as you would its Italian counterpart. As it is now, it will be too big for most palates to handle. —D.M. 1 Note

Another great success from this famous old vineyard. Rich, dense and complex, yet dry and balanced, this Zin has a marvelous melange of flavors. Blackberries, wild blueberries, black cherries, pepper, cocoa and oak, and a spicy hint of raisins. The finish is amazingly long and vibrant is fresh fruit. 1 Note

Has the balance, weight and mouth feel of a good Cabernet, with soft, fine tannins and blackcurrant, cocoa and oak flavors. You might think it was a Cab, except for the peppery, briary edge. Shows unusual control for Zin. 1 Note

Less ripe than Ravenswood’s other Sonoma Zins, with an herbal edge to the cherry and cocoa flavors, and not as balanced. The tannins are more pronounced, too. 1 Note

The hot vintage enormously ripened the grapes, so what you get is a wine that’s almost like a fruit reduction sauce. But it’s dry and has enough acidity for balance. Really strong in blackberry jam, cassis, cherry and cola flavors, it’s a big, bold wine, enriched with a dash of Petite Sirah and Carignane. 1 Note

Fairly closed and tannic, a wine you might want to cellar for a few years to let the blackberry, gingerbread, coffee, grilled meat and spice flavors emerge. It’s a dry and balanced Zin, with great integrity. 1 Note

A beautiful example of a mountain Zin, and wears its vineyard designation well. Big-time plum, coffee, chocolate and herb flavors, powerful but smooth tannins, and a bone-dry finish combine to produce a wine of dramatic heft and complexity. 1 Note
